Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a Consultant in Spinal Cord Injury to join the team at The Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre at The James Cook University Hospital. This is a replacement appointment to join existing colleagues in a purpose built centre integrated within a major trauma centre with full supporting facilities.

The Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre serves a geographically based catchment in the North of England, from the Scottish Border down to the Lake District and Scarborough, with a population of 3.4 million. There are 4 HDU (two ventilated) and 20 rehabilitation beds. The Centre runs outreach clinics and has geographically based outreach specialist nursing and rehabilitation staff. The centre is supported by a specialist urologist, a specialist plastic surgeon, a hand surgeon, an intensivist and a spinal surgical and neurosurgical team. In addition there is psychological support, a dedicated social worker, an IT specialist and audit support.

The centre is progressive, and we are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic colleague to help shape future direction within a clinically led organisation.

The facilities can accommodate any special interest and this will be encouraged.

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, MRCP (rehab) and completed a minimum of two years training in a spinal cord injury centre.

Main duties of the job

The priority for this post is to deliver high quality patient outcomes, through leading the MDT, for Spinal Cord Injured patients (further detail in job description)

At James Cook University Hospital comprehensive facilities, all on one site, include: 20 bed ITU, PICU, 4 clean air theatres, specialist radiology support, with 24/7 MRI and other imaging, Major Trauma Centre, and neurophysiology, cardio-thoracic, plastic and specialist paediatric support. Children are admitted under joint care in the paediatric centre.

Research is actively encouraged and there are research links with the Universities of Durham, Newcastle and Teesside. The centre is currently taking part in a stage two trial

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP/MRCS or appropriate specialist qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

Desirable

  • Training in appraisal techniques
