We wish to appoint to a middle grade post in, our Tertiary Arterial Vascular and Regional Major Trauma Centre at the James Cook University Hospital site part of South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, covering a population of approximately 1.6 million people.
The successful candidate will have responsibilities at the hub, The James Cook University Hospital, with opportunity to work in any number of the spoke service hospitals of Friarage Hospital, Redcar Primary Care Centre, Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool. The post holder will work within a team that has excellent working relationships with multiple specialties, including vascular interventional radiology, diabetes, orthopaedics, stroke, and renal medicine.
Main duties of the job
An accredited major trauma receiving hospital, it contributes to UK Trauma, Audit & Research Network (UK TARN). It occupies a leading UK position in its survival rates from blunt trauma as evidenced from UK TARN. There will be the opportunity to support the on-call vascular surgeon in 'Red Trauma' calls as the senior decision maker and opening surgeon for catastrophic haemorrhage control as part of the regional major trauma team.
This unit has a strong team focus and the successful applicant will be required to engage with this and develop a role within the team. Given the volume of both elective and emergency work, it is expected that there will be ample opportunity to develop both open and endovascular surgical skills, along with development of leadership, research and audit skills. It is anticipated that the post holder will be actively involved in education and will facilitate and lead in regular teaching and journal club.
There is also opportunity to pursue a Masters in Surgery, MCh (Vascular and Endovascular Surgery) programme with Teesside University.
About us
The Directorate of Vascular Surgery consists of 7 consultant surgeons and 5 Surgical Care Practitioners. There are 2 Specialty registrars from Health Education England North East, 2 Fy1 doctors and a Fy2 doctor. We serve a catchment area of approximately 1 million across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire, covering an area from Ripon and Whitby in the South to Peterlee in the North and Saltburn in the East to Darlington in the West. We provide services across 5 sites including The James Cook university hospital, University Hospital of North Tees, University Hospital Hartlepool, Friarage Hospital, Redcar Primary Care Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The James Cook site is the arterial site and Major Trauma Centre. There are 3 vascular interventional consultants and there are specialist vascular anaesthetists providing vascular pre-assessment and pre-habilitation. We perform EVAR, TEVAR, F-EVAR, B-EVAR and C-EVAR procedures and have a large experience of complex endovascular procedures. There is a Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) to reduce cancellations due the need for HDU beds. We provide varicose vein treatments across the region and provide out-patient clinics across the hospitals in the network.
