Job summary
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic Orthodontist to join our strong team based at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a replacement post to replace a retired colleague and join the current team of three consultants (two full time, one part time) with the Specialty Registrars and Specialty Dentists to provide a comprehensive orthodontic service for Durham, Darlington, Teesside and North Yorkshire across the two main sites, The James Cook University Hospital and Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
The Trust has a purpose built Orthodontic department at the James Cook University Hospital and is a facility shared with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry. There are two single surgeries and a six chair open plan surgery for Orthodontic use. We have an excellent Medical Illustration and Radiology department with 3D imaging including CBCT and an excellent onsite laboratory service with 3D scanner and printer. At the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton there are two single surgeries recently refurbished and shared with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Main duties of the job
- Undertake any responsibility which relates to agreed special interests in orthodontics.
- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absence
- Provide professional supervision and management of Specialty Registrars and Specialty Dentists
- Be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the Consultant/Directorate meetings.
- Take part in annual appraisals (mandatory for all Consultants), carried out by the Clinical Director. Appropriate time and assistance will be provided for preparation.
- Active involvement in clinical audit
- Involvement in research in conjunction with Newcastle University
- Continuing professional development and participate in the Trust's statutory and mandatory training programme
- Any other duties which may be required
About us
There are well established MDT clinics with the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Consultants, hypodontia clinics with our consultant in Restorative Dentistry and orthodontic input for the regional cleft lip and palate services which are based in Newcastle.
The department is a strong training unit with 2 StRs in specialist training and 1 post CSST linked to Newcastle Dental Hospital. The applicant would have the opportunity to develop their teaching skills to provide high quality training in orthodontics.
The successful candidate will be appointed under the new terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract however, this would need to meet the demands of our service.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC and be on the GDC Specialist Register for Orthodontics. Applicants should also have obtained the ISFE in Orthodontics or be within 6 months of attainment at the time of interview of the post.

- Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
- On the GDC Specialist Register in Orthodontics
- Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent
- Royal College Specialist Membership in Orthodontics, or equivalent
- Successful completion of an SAC-approved 3 year training programme in Orthodontics
- Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Orthodontics
- Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Orthodontics (ISFE), or equivalent; or within six months of expected date of achieving ISFE
- Successful completion of an SAC-approved 2 year in a Fixed Term Training Appointment (FTTA) or post CSST training appointment which follows on from the pre-CCST training period of 3 years or within six months of completion, or equivalent.

- Further postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MSc or equivalent)
