Job summary

This post has primarily been designed for a keen candidate aiming to secure a higher surgical training post preferably in Otolaryngology.

The post will provide dedicated research and delivers the perfect opportunity to continue to gain clinical experience in Otolaryngology without compromising application to national selection.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will complete Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification and be expected to actively contribute to the departments' research portfolio including commercial research projects. They will also complete their own research project with senior support and guidance. They will also be expected to contribute actively to the process of clinical audit within the department. Together the research and audit aspects of this post should provide ample opportunity for publication and presentation.

The successful candidate will join the ENT team at The James Cook University Hospital as part of the first tier of trainees. They will be expected to contribute actively to the departments' clinical workload, joining the daily ward round and assisting in the ENT emergency clinics. They will also participate in the on call rota which includes shared ENT and General Surgery/vascular/urology (nights only) shifts.

In addition to and within the research session allocation, there is flexibility to enable attendance in the operating theatre, consultant led clinics and special sessions such as the Cochlear Implant and Head and neck Cancer MDTs. Self-directed learning is encouraged with use of the wide range of educational opportunities available.

About us

The postgraduate medical centre is on site and offers a weekly lunchtime teaching session. There are ample opportunities for presentations and teaching which is strongly encouraged and a there is a regular dedicated session for clinical governance. In addition to the above, there are symposia and regular lectures offered at the postgraduate medical centre. It is expected that you will attend the speciality induction programme and structured appraisals.

This post offers a good opportunity for an enthusiastic candidate aiming to secure a higher surgical training post in Otolaryngology. The post is whole time, and operates a first on-call for ENT on a shared rota with General Surgery/vascular/urology (nights only).

The post has dedicated research sessions, and delivers the perfect opportunity to develop your portfolio and to gain clinical experience in Otolaryngology without compromising application to national selection. The research, and audit aspects of this post should provide ample opportunity for publication, and presentation. You will be working with guidance from Consultants, and team members with broad experience, and specific research interests.

The clinical element of the post constitutes joining the Core Surgical Training (CST) tier of trainees in contributing to the clinical workload, including the daily ward round and emergency clinics. The post offers opportunities to develop experience in all aspects of the specialty in a well-supported and closely supervised environment. The department has an established, Otorhinolaryngology service with other comprehensive subspecialised constituents, including being the MDT host and local centre for Head and Neck Cancer Surgery across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire region, Childrens ENT, Rhinology and endoscopic sinus surgery with balloon sinoplasty, and Otology and skull-base with a full implant service, including cochlear, and middle ear implants. Other specialist services in the department include adult voice, joint paediatric tracheostomy, voice and swallow, and a comprehensive tertiary head and neck dystonia service, offering botulinum toxin treatment.

You will link into a progressive, and enthusiastic multi-professional team based at James Cook which provides comprehensive ENT services to the population of Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire.
