Job summary

30 Hours per week with the possibly of increasing hours in the near future.

We are looking for a Healthcare Assistance (HCA) with suitable theatre experience or willing to learn the role of a HCA.The successful applicant will work within our busy operating theatre department at James Cook University Hospital which has 19 theatres in the main operating department, with a 10 bed recovery suite.Within the theatre suite there are 2 emergency theatres and a dedicated paediatric theatre.

In addition to main theatres there is a Surgical Day Unit which has a 23 hour male and female ward and 3 day surgery operating theatres. We also have a paediatric day unit where children are admitted and discharged on day of surgery. A further 2 theatres are located within the Redcar Primary Care Hospital.

The succcesful applicant will be working within the Head and Neck portfolio which includes, plastics, OMFS, paediatrics, ENT and emergencies, as well as on occasion working at our redcar site, assisting and caring for patients undergoing surgery.

Main duties of the job

The role of a healthcare assistant within the theatre department is a specialised and extremely interesting and rewarding role. As a healthcare you will be directly impacting on the quality of care we provide to patients undergoing a surgical procedure.

As a HCA working within a team you will set up and ensure theatre is ready for the day, setting up for elective procedures, checking equipment and ensuring theatre is prepared for the patient. During a procedure the scrub Practitioner and Surgeons will be scrubbed and therefore will rely on your knowledge and skills to circulate the theatre alongside a theatre practitioner. You will be expected to gain good understanding of the surgical procedures and the neuro and spinal speciality as a whole. You will be fully supported by the theatre sisters and theatre manager and we will endeavour to bring the best out of you and this role will promise to be challenging and demanding but very rewardable.

The department is committed to staff development and offers a good competency based training package, supported by a mentor. As the main tertiary centre within the Tees Valley, candidates will have the opportunity to develop their theatre skills in an exciting multi-speciality environment.
