This post is suitable for a registered nurse, AHP, social worker or Safeguarding Practitioner who will act as a clinical expert for all aspects around Mental Capacity and provide core leadership, training, and support staff in applying the principles of Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (2007); the Care Act (2014) and Liberty Protection Safeguards (2020).

The primary purpose of the role is to ensure that patients who lack capacity to consent to care or treatment who need to access acute health care services receive the highest possible standard of care.

The post holder will actively promote and facilitate evidence based practice and quality assurance within the Trust, raising the profile of patients who cannot consent to care or treatment within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The MCA / DoLS / LPS Lead Practitioner will be located within the Safeguarding Adults Team. The role requires a professional with excellent team working and communication skills; you will provide patient centred care and deliver effective evidence based care to a defined demographic population with diverse health care and social needs.

The successful candidate will need to be prepared to adapt to the changing needs of the Trust as they arise.

  • Highly developed knowledge and understanding of current MCA, DoLS/LPS legislation, guidance and policies from a local and national perspective including the Care Act [2014], Mental Capacity Act [2005] and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards [2009].
  • Knowledge and understanding of anti-discriminatory practice
  • Robust knowledge in the area of safeguarding policy, guidance and legislation.
  • The ability to analyse and collate complex data and to write high quality, analytical reports.
  • Effective teaching, facilitation, assessment, and feedback skills oAbility to work across professional boundaries.

Desirable

  • oExperience of quality assurance, audit, and policy development

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Valid Professional registration with a professional body such as (NMC) / Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) /Social work registration or Significant Safeguarding Practitioner Experience
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject with additional specialist professional knowledge to master's level equivalent
  • Recognised teaching qualification

Desirable

  • Leadership qualification or will attend the Trust's leadership and development and improvement programme (4.5 days).
  • Master's Degree (or working towards) in a relevant speciality
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Academic evidence of safeguarding knowledge

Experience

Essential

  • Proven excellent understanding of operational Mental Capacity and LPS, local and national policies, procedures and agendas, clinical and integrated governance / quality assurance.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with Mental Health, Mental Capacity and DoLS cases and working in partnership with external agencies.
  • Demonstrable experience of Mental Health, Mental Capacity and DoLS/LPS services, issues and providing supervision.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching/course facilitation of Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Training.

  • Experience of undertaking training programmes via virtual platforms
