Job summary
This post is seminal to the delivery of Tees Valley surgical services. Key to this role is the individual's enthusiasm to contribute to the evaluation and sustainability of upper GI services from pathway development, education, leadership, and support to transformation, team building and safe surgical practice development. Public engagement and education is key to sustaining healthcare across the Tees Valley to ensure our population benefit from evidence based approach focused on prevention and healthy living.
The individual's approach must be grounded in extensive technical acumen, and as such is required to have advanced experience in laparoscopic procedures, robotic exposure and training. We believe that a variety of education and experience adds to the holistic decision-making process. As we will focus on depth and breadth of experience, we would advocate applicants have intention to or have completed a fellowship as a broad approach to learning aids in the creation of transformational approach to service application. We feel this approach is specifically important when evaluating the needs of our patients and service users. Personal attributes that would benefit the applicant include team building and aspirant application as colleagues both senior and developing gain a team ethos at this stage. This approach and management of both the team, service and patient journey is surrounded in education and teaching of our team focusing on an MDT methodology.
Main duties of the job
As a regional tertiary centre advancement of practice is mandated. There is an expectation of individual and group contribution to audit with a history of delivered innovation of clinical services that focus on patient centred outcomes with a recognition of delivering services within a financial envelope. A strand throughout this post are the personal attributes. We must be caring, enthusiastic, committed to building a great team with positive working relationships while being willing to undertake additional professional responsibilities at a regional and national level. In closing, this post is responsible for delivering the highest level of care to our population while creating an environment in-keeping with South Tees mission of putting safety and quality first, the vision of empowering our clinicians and values; being respectful, supportive and caring.
The successful candidate will be expected to be part of the Upper GI cancer MDT and be able to perform upper GI cancer resections for malignant disease and complex hiatal surgery, in addition to other benign and biliary work. We provide a share of the elective general surgical provision for the local population.
We expect the successful applicant to have access to a full and equal share of the Upper GI cancer caseload. Within the Upper GI team there is an opportunity to develop a special interest in robotic surgery to compliment that already training is underway for the existing colleagues.
About us
This post is to join a team of 18 General Surgeons, all with a subspecialty interest, based at both The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and The Friarage General Hospital, Northallerton. It is advertised on a whole time (10 PA basis), although any candidate who is unable to work full time will be eligible to apply and, if appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed in consultation with consultant colleagues/ Clinical Director and the Chief Medical Officer.
