Job summary

We are currently looking for a Nutritional Assistant to join an established and enthusiastic team. Ward 28 at James Cook University Hospital is the regional centre for 'Vascular Surgery and Diabetic Foot Service' and we have recently expanded our service to provide a wider range of specialist vascular care.

The unit is the arterial centre for Middlesbrough, Stockton-On-Tees, Hartlepool, Darlington and Durham and our patients are a mix of elective and emergency admissions. Our caseload is variable with patients undergoing vascular radiological procedures such as angioplasties and stents, to bypass grafts and amputations. The recent addition of the diabetic foot service is an opportunity to expand our ability to be involved with patients who require vascular interventions, will often have significant wounds to manage and whose nutritional intake is often key to an improved recovery.

This post is new for us on the ward, and we hope it will provide an exciting opportunity to add to our patients experience around mealtimes and nutrition. We will support you to find out "what works" for our patient group but will also encourage you to bring your own ideas to the role.

Main duties of the job

To assist the qualified nursing staff in providing nutritional support to patients.
To assist patients with nutritional supplements and drinks.
To assist in the preparation and serving of snacks.
To assist in the serving of meals and feeding patients.
To record patients nutritional intake on fluid balance charts and food diaries.
To report accurately perceived changes in a patient manner, eating habits etc.
To promote health within the ward setting.
To prepare the clinical area for meal times.
