An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Rheumatologist with an interest in GIM to join the Rheumatology/GIM Departments at East Surrey Hospital. This post is covering for maternity leave.

The Rheumatology Department plays a significant, and increasing, role in the management of acutely ill patients with Rheumatological conditions across Surrey and Sussex. You will be part of a team managing patients admitted onto acute medical wards, alongside supporting the outpatient Rheumatology service. The GIM element of the role requires joint management of one of the medical wards alongside dedicated on call commitments. Outpatient services are delivered from three sites, Redhill, Crawley and Horsham.

This post has designated fixed evening and weekend on call commitment.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the existing team of 5 consultant Rheumatologists to provide a consultant led acute hospital general rheumatology service. The Rheumatology team will then consist of 6 consultants, 2 specialist registrars in rheumatology and general medicine, 1 specialty doctor in Rheumatology, 2 core medical trainees, 1 FY 2 and doctors and 4 specialist nurses. There is a commitment to prospectively cover for the annual and study leave of the other consultants in the team.

The post holder will undertake 3 regular weekly Rheumatology outpatient clinics between the East Surrey, Crawley and Horsham Trust outpatient departments. In addition to this the post holder will look after 10 medical beds and contribute to on-call GIM rota. Without formal learning in required areas will be encouraged to attend training in teaching and educational supervision, for example at RCP courses. The post holder will also be involved in teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines and in nursing or professions allied to medicine. All consultants are expected to liaise with colleagues to ensure Departmental cover before being absent on annual or study leave; and to administer fixed commitments with six weeks' notice for both themselves and their junior medical staff, to avoid waste of resource or inappropriate cover.
