Job summary
We are excited to offer this opportunity to join our friendly and supportive team as Ward Manager for Magnolia Ward.
Magnolia Ward is a 15-bed ward, supporting the needs of working age adults.
As the Ward Manager for Magnolia Ward, you will provide good clinical leadership and management to the staff team. You will be a source of mental health knowledge and expertise, have vision and resilience to support the ward and your colleagues in keeping the ward environment safe and productive.
The role involves working with patients with chronic mental health challenges, delivering comprehensive psychiatric assessment including risk assessment and risk management plans. There is a great emphasis on physical health care on the unit and staff receive regular training to ensure they are offering up to date interventions and feel confident to carry out care with the patients.
Good communication skills are essential to deliver effective, high-quality healthcare while managing operational aspects and ensuring the ward runs effectively, this will include all aspects of people management: recruitment and retention, safer staffing, staff development, management and clinical supervision, clinical effectiveness underpinned by evidence-based care and key performance indicators and CQC standards. The applicant must be compassionate towards both patients and staff and have an open and honest presence.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for managing the ward team over a 24-hour period
- Manage the staff budget and any other relevant non-pay budget for the ward
- Provide management support to staff through appraisal, clinical supervision and continuing professional development
- Ensure a safe environment for people who use services, carers and staff by adhering to relevant health and safety policies, undertaking risk assessments and care plans, and reporting hazards
- Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure that the views of people who use services and their carers are effectively sought to help inform decision-making on the ward
- Responsible for providing the relevant evidence for the annual quality programme and clinical audits; managing complaints and concerns about patient care; developing improvement plans and taking remedial action as required
- Lead in collaboration with senior leadership team in investigatory processes for serious incidents and disciplinaries as required
- Represent the clinical area in agreed Divisional meetings and clinical practice forums
- Participate in personal development opportunities to maintain and develop professional knowledge and skills
- Ensure staff are up to date with statutory and mandatory training within the Trust
- Participate in the weekend on-call rota forward managers as required
