This is a post for an Old Age psychiatrist within the liaison psychiatry team at East Surrey Hospital. The service is accredited under PLAN (Psychiatric Liaison Accreditation Network) and meets the Core24 standard. The post-holder will have clinical responsibility for adults aged 65 and over referred to the service and for clinical leadership within the older adult side of the liaison service.

Main duties of the job

The liaison team receives referrals from all departments in the hospital and the older adult caseload typically includes patients admitted to the medical wards as well as the clinical decision unit and the emergency department. A wide range of psychiatric presentations are seen.

The role will include assessment and management of older adult patients, supporting the work of colleagues including nursing colleagues and junior medical staff, close working relationships with medical colleagues and other departments in the hospital such as social services, good communication with neighbouring services and safe discharge planning, Responsible Clinician responsibilities for patients detained under the mental health act, advocating for parity of esteem. There will also be opportunities for teaching.

  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification
  • Full medical registration with a license to practice
  • Approved Clinician Status and approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act
  • Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist register or CCT in appropriate specialty (or within 6 months at time of interview / assessment) or equivalent
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills

Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
