Job summary

NHS Commercial Solutions (NHSCS) is a collaborative procurement NHS organisation providing strategic procurement services to NHS organisations within Kent, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and further afield. NHSCS has delivered savings in excess of £270 million working in partnership with trusts and with multiple stakeholders to deliver cash releasing savings, cost and quality improvements across a wide range of categories.

This is an exciting new opportunity for a Sustainability and Social Value Manager to establish a new Sustainability and Social Value programme of support to NHSCS and its members. The role will include extensive engagement with our member NHS organisations and a wide range of stakeholders, based locally, regionally and nationally, including NHS-England, DHSC and others.

This is a pivotal post with responsibility for the strategic development and management of Sustainability and Social Value (SSV) programmes in the South East. We are looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic individual wanting to make a positive difference in the NHS. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate strong personal skills, and extensive experience and enthusiasm for sustainability and social value. They will also be a good communicator, have a strong people focused approach, and broad commercial acumen. This role is part of a network of NHS procurement SSV professionals wider NHS SSV and an opportunity to be part of the established European network.

Main duties of the job

You will be the principal expert in Sustainability and Social Value for the organisation, leading a number of initiatives on behalf of its members, providing strategic leadership and responsibility for multiple procurement programmes to improve value and quality for member trusts.

You will act as an ambassador for NHSCS and senior stakeholders, Board and Executive Director level member Trusts on the Sustainability and Social Value agenda. Working closely with key stakeholders and internal and external customers, you will set up and support collaborative project groups working at all levels of stakeholder seniority.

As an integral part of the NHSCS team you will need to be able to:

  • Implement sustainability strategies for NHSCS and its members, which will include all aspects of social value. Specific considerations will include carbon reduction, environmental impacts, sustainable development, modern slavery, supplier diversity and resilience, plus a wide range of other environmental and socio-economic factors.
  • Work with our existing teams to operationalise strategic and operational initiatives working with both NHSCS and member trust teams.
  • Embed sustainable principles and innovative approaches into our procurement portfolio and practices.

Skills, experience, and a passion for this subject area are essential, together with a need for strong practical implementation experience.

Participate in relevant internal and external working groups and projects and initiatives which may be highly complex with the aim of providing information and advice to the relevant teams, and communicating the relevant content back to your own team.

Present findings of complex investigation and analysis and recommendations in a clear and intelligible form as presentations or written reports, suitable for a wide range of audiences (including those without a sustainability or social value background).

Explain detailed legislative and specialist information making complex issues easy to understand and interpret to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

Use communications to shape best practice and embed business process change.

Use influencing techniques to gain stakeholder agreement and co- operation with business process changes.

Use discretion to determine the best methodology and vehicle to communicate with individuals, groups, customers or the wider team, with a focus on ensuring the information is delivered clearly and without jargon.

Liaise directly with the senior management team to design, implement and maintain KPIs, metrics and dashboards, focusing on measurement and delivery of sustainability and social value through all business activity
