Job summary

Working with Older Adults in Mid and East Surrey, this is a brilliant opportunity to join the Older Adults Intensive Support Team.

This role is vital to delivering excellence in dementia care. This will be done by bringing professional skills and expertise to support the implementation of the care home pathway within each CMHTOP. Promoting health by delivering occupational therapy assessments, interventions and consultation within a Positive Behaviour Support framework within generic and specialised services; and providing clinical leadership, supervision and guidance to care homes pathway staff. This role will supervise an occupational therapy assistant and mental health graduate worker working in the care homes pathway.

We have a robust internal supervision and CPD offer which includes providing a range of Core skills, occupational therapy forums and e learning.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide compassionate and effective leadership to junior staff including support staff and assistants within the Care home pathway and IST

2. To strengthen and actively contribute to the overall leadership of the service.

3. To provide high quality and evidence based occupational therapy assessment and interventions and consultation to people with complex needs who access services and their carers/supporters/family members, generic and specialised n line with the occupational therapy and service pathways

4. To communicate effectively with a range of clinicians, managers, directors, associate directors, people who access services, carers/supporter/family members, stakeholders and agencies.

5. To provide supervision and mentoring to occupational therapists within the occupational therapy service.

6. To ensure the delivery occupational therapy student placements.

7. To actively contribute to the continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities within the wider occupational therapy service.

The position provides leadership across the following services Intense Support Team across Mid and East Surrey. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within all the older peoples community services, as need arises.

To plan and deliver a highly specialist occupational therapy service (in leadership or advanced therapy role) and to oversee its clinical governance.

To contribute to the professional leadership and continued development of a team I service area. The role will be required to provide appraisal supervision career development support and mentoring for junior qualified and unqualified staff and across the Care home Pathways and Intensive support service .

To contribute to the skill development of more junior colleagues within the Intensive Support Team and care home pathways by offering line management and clinical supervision (both individual and group).

To support the Clinical Lead in developing and delivering training presentations.

To work alongside other colleagues to develop shared understandings of peoples presentations that help promote understanding of the underlying function(s) driving behaviour that challenges. This will be guided by the service model, which is based on the principles of Positive Behaviour Support..

To act as a positive role model for junior staff by assisting and guiding them in their duties.

To help junior staff prioritise and manage their caseloads appropriately.

To support the completion of appraisals/personal development plans with junior staff.

To regularly share updates and information to the Clinical Lead, particularly when any incidents arise that may affect the standing or safe operation of the service.

To lead in the supervision and Individual Performance Review/Appraisal of all occupational therapy staff.

To ensure that the healthcare needs of people with dementia and functional illness in care homes are communicated to service commissioners and providers.

To act as mentor for junior colleagues wishing to gain experience in care home work and/or older people.

To provide high quality and comprehensive assessments for people who access the service, adapting the approach as and when needed.

To use highly effective clinical reasoning and formulation skills to devise person-centred occupational therapy care plans, alongside people who access services and their carers/supporters/family members (where appropriate). Ensuring that there is proper regard for their dignity, choice, self-esteem, racial, cultural, sexual and religious needs and preferences

To evaluate the effectiveness of team and occupational therapy interventions.

To undertake comprehensive risk assessments and develop effective risk management plans.
