Job summary

The opportunity has arisen to recruit experienced musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapists to join our established outpatient physiotherapy service at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals.In this role, you will deliver expert assessment and triage as part of the First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) team across North-West Surrey, working within a community setting for part of the week. The remainder of your time will be spent in a Band 7 clinical role within the acute trust's MSK Physiotherapy Department, supporting patient assessment and treatment, while providing clinical supervision to colleagues and guidance on clinical pathways and best practice.

These are exciting times for MSK Physiotherapy services at Ashford and St Peters as we build our growing FCP team. The service is also integrated within the MSK (iMSK) service for the population of North-West Surrey with direct links with ACPs to support our service. We are committed to supporting our patients' recovery and rehab to support our ethos of demedicalising patients to successfully manage their MSK condition.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and specialised physiotherapist to support and develop the FCP & MSK physiotherapy outpatient services both within the trust and at various locations in NW Surrey.

You will work independently under the management of a Clinical Lead for MSK Physiotherapy and actively participate in the professional development of both you and others to help drive the department forwards.

Main duties of the job

Within First Contact Physiotherapist role, to be the first point of clinical contact for patients presenting with MSK or neurogenic conditions or symptoms, providing the patient with the primary assessment, arranging investigations, diagnosis and management options for their condition.

To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes.

To be able to manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner.

To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients using analytical skills, seeking guidance from senior staff as needed. Devise individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills, evaluating the outcomes of your interventions. Then formulate a patient centred treatment care plan.

To be responsible for and actively record your own personal development.

To supervise Band 6 physiotherapist and to participate in the appraisal scheme as an appraisee.

To monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others. To be competent with lone working when appropriate with patients remotely and have awareness of when clinical support is required.

Successful candidates need to hold a BSc/MSc in Physiotherapy and be HCPC registered.

Candidates will have a proven history of providing patient-centred care within MSK physiotherapy service. It is important for candidates to be able to communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in a patients care both those from within the organisation and those outside to ensure effective multidisciplinary working, while maintaining accurate patient records in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy standards and Trust and service standards and policies.

In both the FCP and Clinical B7 MSK Physiotherapist role the successful candidates need to demonstrate the ability to work autonomously as an expert clinician liaising effectively with other health professionals to ensure evidence-based, patient-centred care within their professional scope of practice. Conducting accurate assessments, formulating individualised management plans, including ordering and referring for further investigations (Xrays, blood tests etc), ensuring the patient is on their correct pathway, which includes discharging patients when appropriate to self-manage in line with the FCP roadmap.

To provide leadership in their specialist field and be a key contributor to mentor sessions, service redesign, research and audit and providing service teaching via in-service training.

To ensure timely and effective communication with the clinical/therapy leads and senior staff on all professional matters.

There is a need to attend staff meetings and actively participate ensuring understanding of information imparted. Additionally, to engage within the departmental objectives to progress the physiotherapy service. To work under the supervision of a clinical specialist physiotherapists to apply clinical skills in assessment, treatment and evaluation in line with the iMSK pathways.

Diploma/Degree leading to inclusion on HCPC Physiotherapy register

Relevant 3 years post registration MSK experience in the NHS or similar healthcare related setting

Experience of working in a team and contributing to team decisions

Experience of managing and prioritising own caseload

Experience of supporting staff, qualified and physiotherapy assistants, with the ability to delegate

Involvement in appraisal system as an appraisee.

Teaching of patients, carers, peers and other health care staff
