Job summary

This post is a permanent position for a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in Benign Gynaecology.

It is expected that the successful candidates will contribute to both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with general gynaecology clinics, gynaecology theatres, outpatient hysteroscopy clinics, as well as leading a general high risk obstetric antenatal clinic. The candidate will also have a role in providing Labour Ward, Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-calls, Emergency Gynaecology and Elective Caesarean section lists. The candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to wider departmental responsibilities such as Governance and Leadership and Education.

Candidates must have full GMC registration, have CCT (or be within 6 months of obtaining it), and be on the specialist register. They must also be keen and willing to partake in the Obstetrics on call and cover (non-resident).

This substantive post attract 10 PAs in an approximate 8.5:1.5 split and includes a 1 in 16 non-resident on call rota and a 1 in 16 consultant of the week duty. Flexibility in job planning is a key part of the role. We pay particular attention to work-life balance and the job plan reflects this. Applicants wishing to work part time will also be considered.

Main duties of the job

Deliver Clinical, Educational, Managerial Services of the highest professional standard at Consultant Level to the Department

Deliver Direct Clinical Care to patients, through all parts of the Department assisting clinical decision-making and sharing equally in the workload.

Provide consultant cover in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary team meetings, clinics, theatre time,

Consultants will be expected to review all potential admissions and develop rapid assessment triage strategies to ensure early investigations and disposition of patients is achieved.

Have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, ensuring safe handover as appropriate.

Engage fully with the care of patients outside the department and provide a prompt opinion on request from consultant colleagues in other specialties.

Engage with medical, nursing, management and all relevant co-workers in the delivery of department objectives.

Actively participate in and support other staff with education, research, audit and clinical governance activities.

Participate in the professional training of the staff in the department.

Support recruitment, appraisal, development and mentoring activities to a multi-disciplinary, multi-professional team.

Undertake any other duties appropriate for a consultant.

The Job Plan is based on 8.5 PAs of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) which will be organised on a 16 -week rota.. The rota allows for Consultants to alternate working on busy and less busy days in order to equalise workloads.

This is an indicative weekly timetable for the current staffing of Obs and Gynae consultants. A specific job plan will be agreed between the appointed consultant and to meet the needs of the service. The Job Plan will be reviewed annually.

Every 16 weeks, your regular activities are replaced by Consultant of the week duties, 9-5pm Mon-Friday. This role covers gynae emergencies, gynae inpatients, gynae hot clinic, antenatal inpatients, maternity day assessment unit.

Friday night on call is 1:16 weeks.

Saturday and Sunday oncall is 1:16 weeks. This is onsite 8-5pm and then offsite until 8am.

DSU day surgery unit (Ashford)

ANC antenatal clinic at SPH or ASH

Main theatres can be at SPH or ASH

Theatre list location may between sites due to current theatre estates work

EL CS elective Caesarean at SPH

LW Labour ward at SPH

GOPD gynae outpatient clinic may be at SPH or local provider site

Flex session type may be allocated according to departmental pressures and applicant skillset. This could include repetition any of the direct clinical care elements of the job plan above, as well as supporting the urgent-suspected cancer pathway, gynaecology clinic and theatre waiting lists and early pregnancy unit. It is intended in as flexible in which type of activity is delivered. Flexibility of when the session would be delivered would only occur by mutual agreement.

SPA and admin is delivered flexibly on an annualised basis and hence does not appear as scheduled in the above table.
