Job summary

Here at St Peters our Community Midwifery teams have various working pattern opportunities to support you to work within our supportive and friendly community teams. We want you to be able to provide antenatal care, support the homebirth service and provide postnatal care to the birthing population & their families whilst maintaining a good work life balance.

We want to empower you to practice in an autonomous manner, managing your workload to deliver person centred care to women and their families to meet their individual needs. You will have a close relationship with your team and will work in partnership with external agencies and the wider multidisciplinary team.

As a community midwife you will have the opportunity to support and educate women around birth choices and ensure they have up to date evidenced based information to help guide their decision making process.

Main duties of the job

We have 3 community teams covering a wide area and caring for a diverse cohort of women with differing needs. We work within a number of different settings including GP surgeries, maternity hubs, family centres and individuals' homes.

You will work with families from a variety of backgrounds providing them with care throughout their pregnancy journey working as an autonomous practitioner. You will lead and co-ordinate the clinical activities of the midwifery team in their area particularly in line with Government initiatives and Trust Strategy.

You will be demonstrating your leadership through participating in the restructure of community and homebirth services: influencing, empowering, motivating and supporting staff. Being responsible for the performance management of those in you team.

As part of quality improvement initiatives you will be reviewing clinical incidences and initiating action to minimise risks within the service. You will also be expected to work as manager on-call/bleep holder within your role and be part of the community on-call rota.

Job responsibilities

  • Lead and co-ordinate the clinical activities of the midwifery team in their area particularly in line with Government initiatives and Trust Strategy.
  • Participate in and contribute to recruitment, selection and retention of staff within the department.

  • In the event of short notice sickness/absence etc, will ensure that appropriate measures are taken to ensure the shifts are covered as required.

  • Foster a proactive approach to handling conflict, grievances and complaints. Will anticipate and manage complaints as they arise and take action to prevent recurrence.
  • Work in partnership with Midwifery Leadership team on professional and organisational issues and lead in the implementation of new practices as required.
  • Liaise with IT lead midwife to fully utilise electronic patient record for maternity.
  • Support the development of Antenatal Education
