Job summary

The post holder will

  • be responsible for the management and development of the maternity and gynaecology ultrasound services, ensuring optimum use of staffing and equipment resources to ensure the achievement of local and national screening agenda.
  • be a key member of the senior maternity team, reporting directly to the Head of Midwifery. Responsible for the management and clinical leadership and the day-to-day delivery of the maternity and gynaecology ultrasound service across the Trust. The job plan will be split into 50% clinical and 50% management. The post holder will be responsible as line manager for clinical sonographers and student sonographers.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as an expert practitioner demonstrating and disseminating advanced practice and knowledge in ultrasound examinations.
  • Provide and lead on an expert ultrasound service in line with nationally and locally recommended guidance and protocols
  • Provide specialist and expert advice to other Sonographers & Health Professionals regarding ultrasound examinations.
  • Maintain and develop links with clinical leads and experts to ensure that standards and scope of training provide staff with appropriate levels of knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the service.
  • To lead on and develop a regular programme of audit open to a multi-disciplinary team ensuring inclusivity of all aspects of clinical practice within the department related to Ultrasound.
  • Contribute to the development of the Obstetric ultrasound Department providing leadership within its strategic work plan.
  • Provide expert clinical and professional leadership and supervision to the trust.
  • Act as the Screening Support Sonographer and follow NHSFASPrequirements as specified in the NHSFASPhandbook and byDQASS
  • Link with networks across the wider health community at both national and local levels to develop and plan strategies for service

To use high specification technical ultrasound equipment and ensure it is in good working order.

  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of ultrasound equipment as required.

Support the investigation of complaints/PALS enquiries, clinical/nonclinical incidents and near misses. Ensure that issues arising from the investigation are suitably addressed and also used as an opportunity to improve and learn within the service. Some of these issues can be of a complex nature.

Ensure that incidents are appropriately investigated in line the Patient Incident Response Framework and where necessary reports are provided / presented to the clinical governance review group.

Ensure the data for the key performance indicators for the FASP (Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme) is produced for quarterly submission to NHS England.

Accountable for ensuring Infection Control and Clinical Governance protocols are complied with, records maintained and corrective action taken where required.

Setting the standard for and coordinating Quality Assurance processes.

Be responsible for equipment testing, quality audit and reject analysis. Ensuring all results are documented and reported. Implementing any change on the results found.

Monitoring, reporting and acting on equipment faults, determining the severity of the problem and its probable impact on the service and Trust. Be accountable for a service continuity plan to be in place for the service and that this is communicated to all relevant staff groups.

Take a role in the technical and patient focused aspects of the departments Audit programme.

To support the department and organisation by carrying out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of a job of this grade and type of work.
