The Phlebotomy department are looking for self-motivated individuals that can work flexibly between Ashford and St Peters NHS Foundation Trust and community clinics. Applicants should be patient focused, energetic, enjoy working as part of a team, have effective communication skills in a fast-paced and constantly busy environment.

This 25-hour post requires the applicant to work in locations across Ashford Hospital, St Peters Hospital, Woking Community Hospital, Clinics in Hampton, Twickenham. Hanworth and any new clinics that the Phlebotomy department provide services for. It is expected that minim 4 shifts out of 7 will be worked between the hours of 07.00 and the latest shift is 20.00. Only applicants that are able to travel between sites will be considered.

Full training is given so no previous healthcare experience is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

  • Take part in required training and follow protocol in line with best practice.
  • Take blood following protocol, providing care, empathy and minimal distress to the patient.
  • To demonstrate professionalism, honesty and integrity in all matters of a confidential nature.
  • Affective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a pressurised environment, in a professional manner.
  • Able to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Able to deal with aggressive nervous and distressed patients
  • Empathy in dealing with anxious patients
  • Ability to communicate where there are obstacles to understanding
  • Clear legible handwriting with the ability to write on a small surface area.
  • Good hand eye co-ordination and manual dexterity.

Patients may be on wards, in outpatients, community clinics from children to adults inclusive of patients receiving end of life care.
  • Show empathy and an understanding for patients and work to meet the individual needs of the patients in OPD, ward areas recognizing challenges such as dementia, children, anxiety, physical and mental disabilities.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate with patients calmly and politely even under stressful circumstances, deal with patients while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Carry out safe methods of disposal of sharps, contaminated waste, general waste and confidential documents.
  • Ensure samples sent to the laboratory are suitable for analytical/therapeutic or diagnostic testing by meeting all the pre and post analytical criteria.
  • Work as part of a team and when required alone.
