Main duties of the job

As a Maternity Support Worker, you don't need any previous healthcare experience, but you will need good literacy (English) and numeracy (maths) skills. We will provide you with all the training that is required to do the job.

It's your personal skills and values that will be most vital to the role;

we need you to be proactive, compassionate, and willing to get stuck in. It's a hands-on environment where teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential.

Maternity Services Support Worker roles represent a world of opportunities within the NHS. They are a great entry point into the NHS and can lead on to a lifelong career. This is a developmental role and we will expect you to undertake the 'care certificate.' If you're looking to become a healthcare professional and want to gain training and experience, it's a great place to start.

Job responsibilities

A Maternity Support Worker works under the direction of a registered midwife;

  • helping to care for mothers and babies
  • supporting the smooth running of the labour ward, inpatient wards, antenatal clinic and day assessment unit.
  • Performing basic clinical tasks - supporting hygiene, hydration, vital signs and dietary needs
  • Preparing women for clinical examination and tests
  • Updating records
  • Cleaning and preparing the birthing environment & equipment
  • Escalating concerns to a registered midwife or nurse
