Band 2 Healthcare Assistant - Early Pregnancy Unit

The early pregnancy unit at St. Peters hospital is a fast acute busy environment that sees ladies between 0-12 weeks of pregnancy who have pain and bleeding in pregnancy. Alongside other specialist testing and referrals. EPU is an acute emergency setting.

The team encourages staff to develop both clinically and personally and we provide a comprehensive induction programme and in-house training, with opportunities for future development. This year will be well suited for an established HCA/MA who wishes to extend their scope of practice into a new area.

Duties for this post will include supporting the registered nursing and midwifery teams in providing patient care, clinical duties such as undertaking observations, supporting new and junior staff and extended roles such as venepuncture and cannulation (following appropriate training), pre-operative assessments, assisting with minor procedures such as MVAs.

We are looking for Health Care Assistants with a minimum of 2 years' experience caring for patients in an acute clinical setting, with a willingness to undertake an NVQ or equivalent in Health and Social Care. This role is an essential part of the nursing team and requires someone who is reliable, caring and compassionate. Working with the multi-disciplinary team, you will need to have good communication skills, both written and verbal, and basic computer skills.

Main duties of the job

  • Support nurses and midwives in the care of women attending the early pregnancy unit giving direct care to women experiencing problems in early pregnancy. This may include observations, telephone follow ups, blood taking, cannulation and pre-operative assessments. Clerical duties including use of the computer, re-stocking, cleaning etc.
  • Take part in the care of bereaved parents.
