Job summary
We are seeking a suitably qualified Cardiac Physiologist to join our team at Woking Community Hospital and Ashford and St Peters NHS Foundation Trust. We are a very active department providing a wide range of investigations and are looking to expand our team of multi-skilled Cardiac Physiologists.
The department offers a wide range of invasive and non-invasive investigations. In terms of echocardiography, the department currently offers Transthoracic echocardiography, Transoesophogeal echocardiography, bubble studies, and stress echoes. The successful applicant will be expected to work these services alongside the Echo service lead.
You need to have extensive experience in echocardiography, and will be specialised in this area. You must be a self-motivated, well organised individual with excellent interpersonal skills, and have the ability to prioritise work and use your initiative.
The applicant will be responsible for performing transthoracic echocardiograms, assisting with trans-oesophageal, bubble and stress echo studies, and progressing the department in other, novel aspects of echocardiography and research.
Applicants must be BSE accredited and expected to be able to work cross-site. Applicants should have substantial post qualification experience.

Main duties of the job
The postholder will;
- To have and extensive experience in Echocardiography and in the echocardiography service across both hospital sites (Ashford, St Peters and Woking Community alongside with the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist and Lead for Echo, whilst working alongside other physiologists to ensure delivery of a quality clinical service.
- To be BSE accredited and undertake, supervise, and teach at a high level TTEs
- To assist with TOE, Bubble Studies, and Stress Echoes. To eventually perform and join the Physiologist -led Bubbles studies and Dobutamine Stress Echoes
- To maintain a progressive learning environment and ensure the development of all members of the department.
- To provide and partake in 7-day echo service and work weekends on a rotational basis

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
- To participate in the provision of the full, technical echo service with BSE accreditation. Where a candidate does not have BSE accreditation, funding will be provided and, where BSE accreditation is achieved, the applicant will be contracted to stay within the department for one year post-accreditation. Early resignation will be associated with potential reimbursements for BSE courses and exam fees to the department.
- To provide an efficient running of the technical service by prioritising daily workloads.
- To maintain standards of technical competency in the provision of non-invasive, technical cardiac procedures.
- To take joint responsibility for the review and prioritising of inpatient requests for echocardiograms on a daily basis by liaising with ward/medical staff and ensuring availability of technical staff and resources.
- To jointly oversee the day to day running of the echo service, ensuring that all equipment is operational, clean, and that stock levels are adequate.
- To be jointly responsible for the management of equipment faults, and directly resolve these with the relevant company engineers.
- To be jointly responsible for the service contract and servicing of all echo equipment.
- To effectively, promptly, and professionally respond to emergency situations maintaining control and requesting assistance as necessary.
Managerial:
- To provide statistical records and audits when required.
- To jointly manage the echo department alongside the second Lead Echo Cardiac Physiologist.
- To be responsible for the management of junior cardiac physiology echo personnel.
- To assist with the recruitment and retention of all staff within the department.
- To assist with all aspects of the organisation and performance of the echocardiography service and provide management of the echo rota including weekend working hours.
- To work with the Lead Echo Physiologist and Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist to ensure procedures are in place to achieve Government targets within the service.
- To develop protocols, guidelines, and policies within the department in order to achieve IQIPS accreditation.
- To develop protocols, guidelines, and policies within the department in order to achieve departmental BSE and/or European accreditation.
- To implement local policies and guidelines and ensure these are adhered to at all times and ensure these incorporate current professional recommendations and evidence based practice.
- To work in accordance with standards set by the British Society for Echocardiography, the Society for Cardiological Sciences and Technology (SCST), and the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP)
- To be familiar with the use of PAS, PRISM, CRIS, Cerner and any other computerised systems integral to the running of the department.
- To manage own time to achieve a balance between clinical and administrative duties.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties at the discretion of the Operations Manager & Principal Cardiac Physiologist.
