Job summary

One whole-time/part time post as a Locum Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with an interest in benign HPB is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a 1 year fixed term contract.

Oxford University Hospitals is developing it's Emergency General Surgery Department based on 9 Consultant Emergency General Surgeons, 2 Specialists in Emergency General Surgery, 6 Senior Clinical Fellows, 4 Advanced Nurse Practitioners and daily Consultant Peri-operative Physician input. This is supported by appropriate access to emergency and urgent operating theatre lists, level 1 and 2 critical care support for perioperative care, and timely access to all diagnostic services.This post is for one of eleven Consultants / Specialist Doctors providing leadership and service at all stages of the emergency surgery pathway from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Consultant roles in the unit include "hot" consultant leading the on-call take, dedicated emergency theatre days, ward and emergency clinic cover. There is job-planned time for elective clinics, operating and endoscopy.

The surgical emergency unit provides emergency general surgery services for the Oxford area, acute surgical support for other units in the Trust (e.g. IBD, intestinal failure, nutrition) and a tertiary acute surgical service for the region (e.g. complex pancreatitis, trauma).

The post holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for emergency surgery and the Churchill and / or Horton Hospital in Banbury for elective work, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations.

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • CCT in General Surgery or Registration on GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery or equivalent; or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.

Experience

Essential

  • General training in general surgery and emergency/trauma surgery to specialist level or equivalent
  • Advanced training in emergency and trauma surgery. Advanced training in minimally invasive surgery
  • Consultant or senior trainee level responsibility

Skills and knowledge

Essential

  • Sufficient leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of specialist and consultant in a large teaching hospital.
  • Excellent personal and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Computing skills: ability to use standard programmes
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Publications in emergency or trauma surgery
