Haematology Ward Manager - 12 month fixed term contract
The Haematology Ward cares for people having treatment for blood or bone marrow disorders.
As the acting Ward Manager you will contribute to the smooth operational running of the ward, acting as a role model for junior team members and supporting the development and delivery of a high standard of specialist nursing care.
In this role you will be responsible for the development and support of a team of nurses. You will have the opportunity to develop your personal, managerial and leadership skills. We place a high priority on education and support for all staff. Each member can expect regular appraisal and have a personal development plan.

Main duties of the job
As acting Ward Manager, you will:
- Be responsible for the day-to-day management of budget and resources on the Clinical Haematology ward, to ensure the smooth running of the multi-disciplinary service.
- Provide an excellent professional and clinical leadership in the field of cancer nursing promoting the development of the service, practice and individuals.
- Promote liaison between Haematology, the wider cancer centre and integral departments, contributing to the strategic review of cancer services and service delivery.

Clinical
- Demonstrate clinical expertise in the delivery of direct nursing care acting as a role model to the nursing team and demonstrating partnership with patients.
- Ensure the effective delivery of a high standard of nursing care for all patients within the ward by providing clinical leadership, direction, supervision and maintaining effective systems of work.
- Supervise and monitor nursing practice within the unit to maintain standards and ensure competence.
Management
- Manage the nursing on the ward, ensuring the safe and effective staffing levels at the appropriate skill mix are maintained, including the coordination of leave and duty rotas and the maintenance of accurate records, liaising with the matron where the appropriate skill mix cannot be maintained.
- Ensure the appropriate use of the staff and non-staff budget and Trust Funds on the ward, being aware of the resource implications of clinical and managerial decisions and ensuring cost effectiveness.
- Select and appoint the nursing team with support from the matron as required.
Education:
- Create an environment that support and encourages personal and professional growth within the nursing team.
- Identify the training needs of staff under their supervision and develop appropriate educational strategies.
- Maintain accurate staff training records.
