Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

LED Trauma Junior Clinical Fellow - Registrar

The closing date is 16 September 2025

Job summary

Applications are invited for the position of Middle Grade Orthopaedic Trauma Fellow. We have a position available to start August 2025, 12 months fixed term contract.

The post is suitable for candidates who have completed Core Training in the UK or who have at least a year of Orthopaedic Trauma experience in a UK Major Trauma Centre or Trauma Unit. Those without this experience will not be shortlisted.

The Oxford Trauma Service was established in 1941 and now leads the Thames Valley Major Trauma Centre caring for a population of 3.2 Million. It is a prestigious 24-hour Consultant led service with an international reputation for research, innovation and orthoplastic limb reconstruction.

This post will have the same clinical timetable and opportunities as Oxford Speciality Trainees and will be well placed to apply for subsequent ST or CSER training rotations. This role is focused on Orthopaedic Trauma and will not require oncall cover of infection, soft tissue injuries, hands or cauda equina.

Regular teaching sessions run in the department each week and fellows are expected to be involved in teaching medical students and more junior members of the team. Successful candidates will be expected to play a full role in service development, quality improvement and audit in the department and demonstrate this through publication and presentation.

Main duties of the job

We care for Trauma patients, and all infections, soft tissue injures, hand injuries and cauda equina are managed by other services. However, the Trauma middle grade supports the spinal service for trauma and metastatic spinal cord injuries overnight.

Patients are cared for by 12 consultants. The consultant tier is supported in theatre by two post-CCT Trueta Trauma fellows.

The middle grade tier consists of 6 Specialty Trainees, a CESR Trainee, and 2-3 junior clinical fellows (this post).A key component of this post is that all the middle grade doctors have the same clinical training opportunities and service commitments including theatre, ISCP WBAs, and educational supervisor and regular MCRs.

The Trauma Service at the John Radcliffe Hospital runs a 'consultant of the week' model of patient care delivery reflecting its major commitment to emergency work. For each 24 hour period there is a designated on-call team which is Consultant led. The oncall consultant, middle grade and F2 doctors work shifts in a team structure. Following an MDT and hand over ward round, the night team are off duty the following day. Two further consultants are committed to running the two daily operating sessions while a fourth consultant will run daily clinics or ward rounds. Trainees are committed to support these operating lists and clinics.
