Job summary

Caseloading Community Midwife

Band: 6

Hours: Full/Part/Flexible working

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as a caseloading midwife for the continuity of carer team based in OX4; The Ivy Midwives.

The Midwifery Continuity of Carer (MCoC) team at OUH is changing. Research has found that MCoC teams are most likely to be sustainable and least at risk of staff burnt out if based in one geographical area. This along with staff feedback of working across the whole of Oxfordshire have led to the decision, to change from a vulnerable women's CoC team to an enhanced continuity of carer team based in an area of high deprivation.

Northfield Brook within the OX4 postcode in the south of the city is the only area in Oxfordshire with the lowest Index of Multiple Deprivation score of 1.

A MCoC team in this area will support the local and national aim to reduce health inequalities and provided an enhance level of care for those most in need.

Main duties of the job

Vision and Philosophy of the Ivy Midwives:

The team vision & philosophy is to empower women and their families to begin parenting feeling confident, capable and well-supported in giving their child the best start in life. In addition, reduce the impact of inequalities amongst maternal and neonatal healthcare. Delivering this vision and supporting women and their families to make sustainable changes, will help decrease the generational impact often associated with hard-to-reach groups. Furthermore, break down barriers and address the associated links with 'Adverse Childhood Experiences' (ACE's).

The overall primary goal is to achieve: Healthy Pregnancy, Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby.

As a caseloading midwife you will be planning and implementing individualised midwifery led care, in partnership with the woman and the multidisciplinary team. Using continual assessment and analysis you will provide continuity of carer throughout the woman's pregnancy, birth and postnatal period to ensure her medical, psychological and social needs are assessed and holistically cared for. As a caseload midwife you will be working alongside multi professional teams providing the most appropriate care for women whilst breaking down barriers that can inhibit women with socially complex lives accessing high quality maternity care.

About us

Here in Oxfordshire, we offer a unique set up of our Maternity Services with around 7500 babies born annually.

We have 4 stand-alone Midwifery-Led Birth units within the county. These are based at Banbury, Chipping Norton, Wantage and Wallingford and we also offer home births to all areas. There is also an integrated Midwifery-Led birth unit, where around 10% of women and birthing people choose to go in labour. As a tertiary hospital, the John Radcliffe is composed of a Delivery Suite with 3 Maternity Theatres and a specific Maternity Recovery Ward. We work closely with specialist services such as the Fetal and Maternal Medicine Unit, Breech Team, and Maternity Bereavement Teams. Midwives employed within the service have the opportunity to rotate to all our units/departments providing care to both low and high risk women.

For those working with us, we have a substantial support network for staff, focusing on wellbeing and development. This includes a team of professional Midwifery Advocates, Wellbeing Champions, staff networks and a staff Maternity Psychologist. We champion diversity and strive to ensure every member of our team feels included, valued, and has the confidence to speak up and be heard.

We genuinely believe that by supporting our staff to feel happy and offering support within their work environment, we ensure the best quality of care for the women and birthing people who access our services.
