Band 6 Cancer Nurse Navigator for Gynaecology

Job summary

NHS England have developed a programme to establish Rapid Diagnostic Centres (RDCs) to promote earlier diagnosis or to rule out cancer.

This role will work independently but under the guidance and supervision of the Rapid Diagnostic Leads, to enable and support patients who are on the Rapid Diagnostic Service (RDS) pathway. The role will provide specialist advice to professionals regarding individuals presenting with symptoms that could be due to cancer. The role involves communication with multiple healthcare professionals across primary and secondary care.

The post holder has the responsibility to provide a professional, comprehensive, and efficient service, which is effectively delivered to all patients in line with the RDS guidance.

The navigator will be able to access resources and services which will help patients to a more effective and speedy diagnosis of cancer or benign disease. This post will also act as a named point of contact for those patients and will be an appropriate support to help deal with complex patient issues.

Main duties of the job

Provide a constant point of contact, provide advice, support and information for all patients referred to the RDS from referral to diagnosis or at the point they are assigned a Cancer Nurse Specialist (if a cancer is found)

To be involved with the assessing, planning, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence-based care.

Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues to develop services and high quality of care delivered.

Triage complex referrals where more specialist management is required to appropriate clinical staff.

Manage an agreed patient caseload, when the diagnosis may be uncertain, according to own clinical judgement and skills.

Order/undertake, interpret, and act upon diagnostic tests and investigations.

Identify, assess, and triage patients ensuring smooth transition to other services as appropriate.

Liaise with the Multi Diagnostic Clinic teams to arrange patient appointments and review.
