Job summary

Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI (Oesophagogastric) Surgery

A whole-time post as Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI (Oesophagogastric) Surgery is available from April 2026 for one year at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This post is ideally suited to an individual who has completed General Surgical Training and who would benefit from a period of Specialist UGI training prior to consultant appointment.

The Oesophagogastric Unit carries out 120-140 resections for malignancy each year, serving a population of 2.5 million. The Unit also has a busy programme in surgery for benign oesophageal disease.

This is a replacement post.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

The post holder's duties will be primarily be based at the Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals, but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust. The post-holder will work predominantly on the Oesophagogastric steam undertaking Theatre lists, Clinics and Endoscopy.

The post-holder will also be involved in the provision of out of hours specialist cover for Oesophagogastric patients and week-end ward cover under the supervision of one of the six consultants.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for the daily care of Oesophagogastric inpatients and will be expected to lead the team of junior staff on the UGI Unit, particularly in the allocation of staff to ward work, theatre sessions and outpatient clinics.

Teaching/research:

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. Opportunities to further develop formal teaching skills are provided and encouraged. There will also be ample opportunity for the post holder to be involved in research. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training, research and audit will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, Health Authorities, and external accrediting bodies. In addition, the postholder will be responsible for organising the monthly Morbidity & Mortality meeting and will actively participate in entry of data into National Databases, such as NOGCA and CODA.

  • Hospital appointment at SpR level or equivalent
  • Evidence of training in advanced laparoscopic & oesophagogastric surgery
  • Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Skills
  • Ability to perform diagnostic OGD independently

Desirable

  • Advanced training in Emergency General and Trauma Surgery.
  • Training in Oesophageal Surgery
  • Ability to perform OGD & dilatation

Skills and Knowledge

Essential
