CT 1/2 in General Surgery

Job summary

Applications are invited for a post at core trainee level in General Surgery for one year. The post is based on the Surgical Emergency Unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital which is a busy consultant led unit. Your timetable will include dedicated weeks of emergency operating, managing the acute admissions and running the ambulatory clinic with senior support. This position will exposure you to all areas of general surgery. There are excellent opportunities for teaching, in conjunction with the medical school of Oxford University, and to become actively involved in audit and research programs running within the unit. Our unit has a first class record in preparing trainees for core and higher surgical training positions and we will aim to prepare you for this application process. The night-time commitment is 1 in 10.

Due to the workload of the unit previous work within the NHS is essential.

Main duties of the job

The junior fellow post is based on the Surgical Emergency Unit (SEU) at the John Radcliffe Hospital which is a busy consultant led unit. The unit deals with around 200 patients per week in the triage area and another 150 patients in the acute ambulatory clinic.

The SEU undertakes all emergency general surgery operations including approximately 400 acute laparoscopic cholecystectomies, 800 laparoscopic appendicectomies and over 200 emergency laparotomies a year. The John Radcliffe Hospital is also a Level 1 major trauma centre.

The junior fellow post will give the successful candidate the skills to manage acute general surgical conditions ready for progression into speciality training. There will also be exposure to the management of specialist, tertiary level cases in colorectal, oesophagogastric and hepatobiliary surgery. The timetable will include dedicated weeks of emergency operating based solely in theatre and also the opportunity to undertake elective operating in general, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery giving you exposure to all the surgical skills required to apply for ST3 jobs.

The night-time and weekend commitment is shared amongst all the CT grades working in general surgery at the John Radcliffe hospital in a fair and transparent rota.
