One whole-time post as consultant in Anaesthesia and Neurosciences Intensive Care is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holders duties will be primarily at the West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trusts locations: John Radcliffe, Churchill and Horton Hospitals and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital.

Clinical

The focus of this post is the delivery of high-quality anaesthesia in the West Wing theatre suite. There are in addition flexible sessions in the posts allowing the post-holder to maintain an interest and skills in other areas of anaesthesia. Out of hours the post-holder will be part on call provision for neurosciences intensive care, and part on call provision of stroke services.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through Appraisal.

Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Medical degree FRCA or equivalent
  • CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent with entry in Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or within 6 months of the date of interview)
  • GMC

Desirable

  • Possession of other related postgraduate qualification such as FFPMRCA, MD, BSc, MSc or PhD
  • Additional advanced training or fellowship in a relevant sub-specialty ALS/ATLS/APLS Course Instructor

Experience

Essential

  • To be able to work independently at consultant level, and perform as a member of a team
  • Additional advanced training in Trauma, Orthopaedics and Regional Anaesthesia

Desirable

  • Additional advanced training in a relevant sub-specialty
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
