Job summary

This role is a senior member of the Commercial Directorate who will hold responsibility for delivery of challenging projects and business developments as agreed with the Head of Commercial - Private Patients, Overseas Visitors and International relating to the development of the private patient business and effective management of the overseas services in accordance with the national guidance.

The post holder will be highly skilled at effective negotiation, have clinical and professional credibility and influence with a wide range of diverse stakeholders within the divisions to ensure opportunities for private income are maximised and the service to private patients and overseas visitors exemplary. You will also deputise for the Head of Service as required.

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the Private Patients (PP) and Overseas Visitors (OSV) Service Delivery and Service Development

Manages all operational staff within the PP and OSV team, including recruitment and performance

Negotiating and establishing productive relationships with all the divisions to enable improvement and successful business developments

Leadership

1. Provide leadership to the private patient and overseas services across the trust, ensuring day to day management, operations and delivery of services in line with corporate objectives and values.

2. Enable comprehensive and efficient planning, monitoring and reporting processes relating to the finance, operation, quality, administration, risk and governance of the private patient and overseas visitors services.

3. Lead the development, review and improvement of policies and controls in relation to private patient and overseas visitor services, with reference to the national guidance and local policies and procedures.

4. Develop strong external relationships with key stakeholders such as insurers to negotiate viable terms and conditions to maximise activity growth and income.

5. Lead the relationships with internal stakeholder such as consultants, and NHS staff and management to enable service development.

6. Be responsible for all the physical resources associated with the service in order to manage the budget and cost implications of the service developments.

7. Operationalise the Medical Advisory Committee to oversee private practice and commercial business opportunities for private patients at the trust.

8.Ensure all appropriate governance is implemented, managed and addressed aligned with general trust policies.

9. Ensure services meet national and local quality standards.

10. Ensure that appropriate approval and escalation processes are put in place that align with the line management structure of the Commercial Directorate and the limits of delegation established by the Commercial Director.

11.Conduct all activities in line with best practice governance requirements.

12.Deputise for the Head of Commercial - Private Patients, Overseas Visitors and International as required.

Operational Management of the Service

1. To lead and manage delivery of the clinical service relating to the Private Patient and Overseas patients and undertake service development projects alongside the divisions in order to utilise non-NHS capacity across the Trust to support the income for the trust.

2. To build effective working relationships with clinical, administrative & finance staff who support the delivery of private and overseas patient activity within the Trust, supporting them to become engaged with the Trusts development of facilities and services for private patients and overseas.

3.Provide leadership to the team of staff you are responsible for by ensuring that all staff have the necessary skills and experience in order to discharge their duties as defined by their job descriptions and project role definition. You will be responsible for recruitment, appraisals and performance of the whole staff group (currently 20 staff).

4. Ensure and monitor the professional development of the team and individual team members.

5. Support the alignment of the team objectives with the Commercial objectives and financial plan such as CIPS, to ensure income and activity targets are met.

6.Undertake regular review of systems, establish consensus for and implement changes to deliver system improvements.

7.Formulate, update, implement and monitor operational policies and procedures for the private patient and overseas service..

8.Ensure that clinical governance is managed and addressed. Ensure services meet national and local quality standards.

9. Act as a key point of contact for the service; build strong relationships with external stakeholders including insurance companies and the public to promote opportunities for private patients.

10. Maintain a risk register relating to the delivery of quality of service, activity and financial targets, develop mitigations for those risks and implement actions agreed.

Business Development

  1. Operationalise and influence the business development opportunities to grow contribution to NHS services from the private patient and overseas visitors services. This will be achieved through negotiation with the divisional teams and a wide range of diverse stakeholders to ensure opportunities for private income are maximised and the service to private patients exemplary
  2. Delivering a high standard of work in supporting the delivery of projects on time, to quality standards and in a cost-effective manner. Be responsible for creating progress reports and escalating relevant concerns about individual projects.

3. Analysing and interpretating a range of information and its presentation to a wide variety of stakeholders, persuading them of the importance of the project, and influencing their decision-making when appropriate.

4. Collate qualitative and quantitative information as required to provide appropriate analysis to develop robust business cases/approval papers that contribute to project outcomes.

5.Support commercial activities as required including supporting the financial budgeting and management arrangements for the Directorate to support its delivery of financial targets.

6. To ensure that effective documentation / audit processes are maintained for all contracting activities.

7. Support the development of rebranding and marketing plans for private practice.

Relationships and Reputation Management

1. Establish and develop positive ongoing relationships with all internal and external stakeholders with the aim of developing future business opportunities, maximising PP and OSV income and providing an excellent standard of service to private patients.

2. To lead the existing relationship and operating agreement with other local private healthcare providers establishing opportunities for development and growth.

3. Contributing to annual contract negotiations with insurers and other corporate PP customers through supply of efficiency data and ensuring that appropriate contracts are in place and performance managed.

4. Drive and communicate a corporate and private patient culture aimed at responding to customer requirements.

5. Develop effective relationships with current and potential service providers (both internally and externally) to develop understanding of private patient needs.

6. Work closely with other members of the Commercial Management Teams to ensure there is a clear framework for decision making within the organisation for private patients.

7. Provide specialist advice and support to the Divisions in the production of private patient and non-NHS income business cases.

8. Develop strong relationships with all private patient referral sources.
