We are looking forward to welcoming an enthusiastic, hard-working and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to provide 12 months' maternity leave cover for Upper Airways Speech and Language Therapy, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for 22.5 hours per week (0.6 WTE).

The ideal candidate will have experience in this clinical area and be able to practice autonomously and independently alongside other members of the multidisciplinary team, and be able to form positive therapeutic relationships with our patients. In addition, contribute to further growth and development of the Upper Airways service.

The successful person in post will join the experienced, friendly, and friendly Adult Speech and Language Therapy Team. Collectively, the SLT team works across a broad range of both inpatient and outpatient areas across the Trust sites, including Stroke, Neurosciences, Head and Neck Cancer, General Inpatients, Critical Care, and Voice/ENT workstreams. The Team also works closely with wider SLT services both within the Trust and the wider Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care System (BOB ICS).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be the clinical lead, highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist in upper airway disorders, working to develop and deliver a service model and pathway which demonstrates evidenced based, effective, and efficient clinical care for this caseload. The postholder will work with the Special Airways MDT, ENT team, and the SLT team to deliver and develop this service.

The post holder will:

  • Use highly specialist clinical skills to identify, assess, diagnose and manage a specialist caseload of adults with upper airway disorders including chronic refractory cough and Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction.
  • Run a monthly videostroboscopy clinic to provide visual laryngeal assessment, treatment techniques and bio feedback to patients with these conditions, selecting the appropriate intervention for effective, evidence-based therapy.
  • Take a clinical lead role in service developments in this area and take responsibility for service wide developments as appropriate.
  • Have a specialist advisory role for the Trust in this specialty area, giving service-wide second and expert opinions.
  • Train others in the management of upper airway disorders and associated voice, ENT and swallow disorders.
  • Independently support students on placement for clinical teaching and supervision, including exam placements.
