Job summary

This role is based predominantly in Respiratory Lung Function, with the opportunity also to gain experience in Sleep and Ventilation medicine.

This is a Band 6 post, mainly based at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, but with the vision of offering services at the Horton Hospital in Banbury and John Radcliffe Hospitals in due course. The department works closely with the University and the Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit and there are excellent opportunities to participate in research projects in partnership with the university and the Trials Unit.

The Lung Function Lab provides a vital service to patients with respiratory disease and also in supporting a number of other clinical services within the Trust who rely heavily on the skills provided by this specialist team.

Main duties of the job

It involves maintaining and contributing to excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice across the Lung Function and Sleep and Ventilation Units and contributing to their further growth and development.

To be able to perform with minimal supervision the physiological tests listed under main responsibilities.

To obtain accurate and informative results from patients and any other subjects performing the tests ensuring specifics of individual trial protocols are met.

To be involved in work requiring a considerable degree of responsibility and autonomy and include activities that are complex and/ or non-routine.

To be able to supervise and help train more junior members of staff/trainees in the clinical dept., plus organisational and management duties to assist the smooth running of the department.

To demonstrate care and respect, for both patients and fellow staff members.

To become an ARTP Practitioner (Level III) Respiratory Physiologist with the Association for Respiratory Technology and Physiology within an agreed timeframe

Train in Sleep physiology and gain experience in CPAP and NIV set ups, performing, analysing and develop skill in the interpretation of overnight oximetry studies and blood gases.
