Job summary

We are recruiting Community Optometrists to join the existing high-quality Eye Casualty Telephone Triage Service. You will be employed as part of our Oxford Eye Hospital team. 1 day a week 7.5 hours. All applications welcome to discuss at interview.

Initial training will be on-site at Oxford Eye Hospital for a number of months, with the option of home working there after.

Main duties of the job

The role is key to the success of eye casualty and to support our colleagues in primary care and community practice. You will need sound professional decision-making skills and good communication skills to be able to triage calls from community colleagues, GPs and patients to ensure that the patients are directed to the correct eye care provision in a safe timeframe. You will need to be comfortable in the use of multiple IT interfaces at a time. There will be access to second opinion from senior ophthalmologists/ clinicians for complex cases. Full training will be given.

About us

Training and consolidation of skills will be onsite at Oxford Eye Hospital with face to face training and support. There will then be an option to work from home once skills and IT/ internet system are proven effective.

You will have access to weekly Online eye casualty lectures as part of the OEH team.

To work closely within the eye casualty team to deliver a comprehensive telephone triage service to highest standards of quality and care and making autonomous decisions using clinical and diagnostic ophthalmic knowledge and experience.

To work within your level of competency and within eye hospital guidelines seeking advice from and senior colleagues, as required, for safe practice.

To utilise a range of IT systems to access phone line, multiple electronic patient records systems and record relevant findings and triage outcome management plans.

Liaise with community optometry colleagues, GPs, ophthalmologist and other professional groups, as needed, on case by case basis.

To work efficiently to maximise the number of calls actioned each session.

To participate in and contribute as required to teaching and training relating to role.

Undertake audit as required.
