Job summary

A whole-time post as Head and neck surgical oncology fellow with Otolaryngology background is available at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford for 12 months from August 2024. The post will have an out of hours commitment on the registrar on call rota at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The appointment is on a whole-time/part-time basis but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

The post holder will gain specialist training in head and neck oncology ENT elective and emergency care, with a general out of hours on call commitment of 1 in 9. They will provide a specialist head and neck ENT service at secondary care level including leading the ward round, assessment of 2ww patients, investigation of potential malignancy, presentation and assessment at MDT, and major resection of head and neck malignancy. They will participate in an emergency service cover out of hours at registrar level.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. You will be supported and encouraged to undertake an audit review of an aspect of care during your time in post.

About us

The ENT department has 8.8 WTE consultants based in Oxford and additional sessions are provided by 4 consultants from High Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals.

The department works across 2 sites within the Oxford University Hospitals Trust. Head and Neck oncology is based at The Churchill Hospital with all other services based in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital. The department provides a

general ENT service for Oxfordshire as well as an in patient services (acute and elective) for patients from Buckinghamshire (combined population of 1.2 million people). It is also a tertiary referral centre for all sub-speciality interests within ENT including complex rhinology, paediatric airways, head and neck oncology, skull base surgery and the Oxford Cochlear Implant Programme. There is close liaison with other surgical specialities including plastics, maxillo-facial, ophthalmics and neurosurgery.
