Job summary

We are looking for a nurse, experienced in the management of long term chronic conditions who has strong leadership skills, to join the established nationally commissioned service for Neurofibromatosis type two (NF2) in Oxford. We are a dedicated multi-disciplinary team focused on improving outcomes for NF2 patients, across the southwest of England.

The postholder will provide expert leadership to plan and deliver the NF2 nursing service in Oxford and across the Southwest regional services. Recognised as an inspirational leader, advanced practitioner and clinical expert in long term chronic conditions they will be a key advisor for NF2 practice.

Background - NF2

NF2 is a rare tumour predisposing genetic disorder characterised by bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The onset of symptoms is most commonly between 18 and 24 years and often presents with symptoms of vestibular schwannoma: hearing loss, tinnitus and balance dysfunction. Affected individuals may also develop schwannomas of other cranial, spinal and peripheral nerves, meningiomas, and ependymomas . Some patients develop peripheral neuropathy and have visual impairment from childhood due to cataracts or retinal hamartomas.

Main duties of the job

This post provides an exciting opportunity to join the established nationally commissioned service for Neurofibromatosis type two (NF2). This service consists of four clinical / administrative co-ordinating centres (Oxford, Cambridge, Guys and St Thomas's, London and Manchester). Oxford is the co-ordinating centre for the South-West region and provides care for paediatric and adults with NF2

The postholder will provide leadership to plan and deliver the NF2 service and provide expert clinical care to complex patients. Recognised as an inspirational leader, advanced practitioner and clinical expert in long term chronic conditions they will be a key advisor to all stakeholders on NF2.

This post is based in Oxford, but will involve some travelling within the region to visit satellites centres, patients and their carers at home. NF2 nurses are currently based in Southampton, Plymouth and Bristol, in addition to Oxford.

Management and Leadership:

  • Lead the NF2 nursing team for the South West of England, provide expert clinical leadership, creating a shared vision and ensuring local and national agendas are assessed and implemented
  • Provide line management to Oxford NF2 nursing and support staff, and conduct annual appraisals in collaboration with the line managers in the satellite centres
  • Provide or delegate appropriate cover for the urgent workload of satellite nurses due to annual leave, sickness or increased workload
  • Participate in service development, policy change and business planning within the NF2 service
  • Participate in service workforce planning and be responsible for recruitment and retention of NF2 nursing and support staff within the South West region
  • Coordinate service specifications agreement and adherence, through performance monitoring and audit
  • In partnership with clinical leads, account for the income and expenditure designated for the delivery of NF2 services
  • Act as budgetary signature, and be responsible for routine budget monitoring
  • Facilitate the management of change, ensuring adequate consultation and collaboration with key stakeholders to produce innovative evidence based practice that improve outcomes
  • Ensure any concerns or complaints are dealt with professionally in a timely manner in accordance with local trust policy
  • Participate in the implementation and delivery of the standards set within the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery Strategy and any local neurology standards

Expert Clinical Practice

  • Work clinically to provide expert care to complex patients with chronic long term needs
  • Act as key member of the MDT in planning, co-ordinating and evaluating care, prioritising need and ensure excellent service standards are maintained
  • Assess paediatric and adult patients, using advanced history taking and assessment skills in a ward environment, nurse led clinics, home visits and on the telephone or by email (many of the patients are deaf).
  • Prioritise patients for urgent or routine review
  • Demonstrate autonomous decision making and make referrals, where appropriate order diagnostic tests in keeping with NF2 guidelines
  • Ensure accurate and detailed records
  • Actively participate in Oxford and NF2 satellite clinics and support nurses in the delivery of a holistic MDT led service
  • Use expert knowledge, to provide advice, education and support directly to patients and their families and other healthcare professionals following a diagnosis of NF2
  • Act as an advocate for patients and their carers, ensuring they receive time, understanding and that appropriate facilities are available to enable them to manage their condition
  • Challenge non evidence based practice and lead change
  • Be able to initiate the process of genetic counselling with patients and as a result determine when a patient would benefit from referral to a Genetic counsellor
  • Demonstrate accountability and confidentiality, ensure safeguarding protocols and procedures are adhered to
  • Develop relationships with health care agencies and other NHS trusts across the South West region, referring to and liaising with services appropriately
  • Utilise a wide variety of advanced communication skills in supporting patients with sensory impairment, and when delivering complex clinical information. Promote total communication techniques for hearing and visual impaired patients

Research/Service Development:

  • Work in close partnership with appropriate Clinical Leads and Service Managers to ensure all local, corporate and national initiatives and targets in relation to NF2 are met
  • Inspire colleagues to implement innovative ideas and evidence based practice
  • Ensure standardised research and evidence based treatment and care is given to NF2 patients across the region
  • Lead on the development of local, regional and national policies and protocols underpinned by current, research and service evaluation outcomes to ensure high standards of practice are shared and maintained
  • Actively promote the Oxford, South West and National NF2 service by publishing or contributing to articles in journals, publications and newsletters
  • Promote patient engagement through regional patient/ carer events, websites and other media
  • Promote the involvement of patients and public to evaluate and improve NF2 services
  • Oversee clinical and service audit analysing data in conjunction with NF2 team and reporting findings to the MDT

Education/development:

  • Maintain registration on the NMC register and at all times adhere to the NMC Code of Professional conduct and other NMC guidelines
  • As a non-medical prescriber, act within the NMC guidelines, attend regular prescribing CPD updates and possess a heightened awareness of accountability in a prescribing role (there is an expectation that any successful applicant would be willing to undertake a non-medical prescribing qualification within 12 months of commencement of the post if they did not currently possess this)
  • Develop formal links through partnerships with local universities, care providers and relevant professional bodies and teach on relevant courses / study days, to ensure patients needs are met through course development
  • Disseminate innovations in practice education and research both through conference presentation and publication
