An exciting training opportunity has arisen for a motivated practitioner to join our Nurse Endoscopist team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This is a trainee Band 6/7 post (dependent on experience) where there is an opportunity for a Specialist Clinical/Nurse Endoscopist to undertake Master's level training and competency based assessment to enable them to function as a Band 7 Clinical/Nurse Endoscopist on successful completion of a JAG accredited endoscopy training course.
You should have extensive experience in endoscopy/gastroenterology and training will be provided to complete the necessary qualifications to become a JAG accredited Clinical/Nurse Endoscopist. The role of the Clinical/Nurse Endoscopist provides the opportunity for a motivated individual to enhance and develop their knowledge and endoscopy skills, with full support from the wider team.
You will be working across our busy endoscopy units, within the Trust and, once working independently, will expected to work a flexible shift pattern to cover weekdays, and some weekends .
Main duties of the job
You will manage your own caseload of patients undertaking gastroscopy and/or flexible sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy procedures to a JAG accredited standard depending on the needs of the service. The post holder will be expected to undertake the NHS England Clinical Endoscopist Training Programme (Level 6 or 7) and potential applicants are strongly advised to research what is to be undertaken. Trainees who have completed the programme have found it a rewarding way to develop their skills and advance their career in a practical patient-focused role.
The role will provide support, expert advice, information, coaching, supervision, education and management to other staff as well as within the wider corporate and multi-disciplinary teams. The post holder will act as an excellent clinical role model and work continuously to improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework, assisting in aspects of audit in relation to both local and national criteria set of the development of Endoscopy Units including JAG and GRS requirements.

Once trained, undertake diagnostic and therapeutic upper and / or lower GI endoscopy using highly specialist and advanced clinical knowledge, skills and decision making to ensure high quality care for patients
Work collaboratively with the Endoscopy MDT, taking an active role in ensuring the service delivers the highest standards of clinical care and meets the requirements of the Endoscopy Joint Advisory Group (JAG)
Clinical Practice:
- Practice autonomously using specialist expert skills to deliver high quality patient care and experience, making clinical judgements to make diagnosis.
- Practice in accordance with JAG standards and achieve JAG accreditation
- Assess suitability of patients for endoscopy, providing information to enable patients to make a decision about undergoing the procedure and give informed consent
- Following training and supervised practice, independently and competently perform sedated and non-sedated diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and / or flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy without direct medical supervision.
- Administer intravenous fluids, sedation, analgesia or antibiotics as clinically indicated within scope of practice in line with appropriate guidelines. Follow PGDs whilst working towards becoming a non medical prescriber
- Monitor the patients safety throughout the procedure, recognising and/or anticipating any untoward events and, dealing with them as promptly and appropriately within relevant guidelines and requesting medical assistance as required.
- Undertake biopsies and simple polypectomy, using diathermy where necessary.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of endoscopic findings and treatment plans, referring patients on or seeking advice from a consultant if required
- Communicate endoscopy results to the patient, explaining findings in a clear way
- Receive, interpret and follow-up histology results from endoscopic biopsies. If appropriate, refer on to other appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Undertake five endoscopy lists per week, working flexibly to assist in meeting waiting list targets, carrying out extra endoscopy lists to cover absence and assist in ensuring that capacity is maintained. Work flexibly between John Radcliffe and Horton Hospital sites
- Work independently and autonomously at an advanced level drawing on a diverse range of knowledge in complex decision making and critical thinking to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Be aware of personal limitations
- Maintain patient documentation to NMC requirements for all patients seen and advice given in any practice setting and contribute to clinical activity/data collection as required.
- Follow local and national policies, adhering to Oxford University Hospital (OUH), British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), Joint advisory Group (JAG) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidance.
