Main duties of the job
The OMFS Department
The main OMFS Department is located in the West Wing at The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and this is where you will be largely based. It provides emergency care and a wide range of general and sub-specialty elective inpatient work for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire regions. Day surgery cases are treated in the West Wing, Churchill head and neck unit, The Horton, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, The Royal Berkshire Hospital and The Great Western Hospital, Swindon.
On some occasions, you may be required to provide cover at the Churchill Hospital.
You will be expected to attend daily ward rounds, undertake ward work and participate in holding the on-call bleep. You will have the opportunity to sit in outpatient clinics and attend theatre to improve and develop knowledge and understanding. There is also regular teaching sessions run by the consultants and you will be expected to attend and contribute to monthly academic sessions, MDT and clinical governance. The specialist registrars are heavily involved in the management of the junior clinical staff and aim to support on-call duties and clinician development very closely.
The work of the Department is supported by a full range of support services including a maxillofacial prosthetic lab, a department of orthodontics and restorative dentistry, Macmillan nurses, TMJ specialist nurses, advanced nurse practitioners and a minor oral surgery unit for procedures under local anaesthesia.

Your role will involve the following service provision:
- Inpatient care
- Providing medical management for all OMFS patients at the John Radcliffe hospital
- Emergency OMFS service
- Including first on-call when holding the baton OMFS SHO bleep, managing referrals internally (from A&E and other wards) and externally (from primary care and referring hospitals) (Night on calls will include cross covering Plastic surgery as first on call from 8pm at night to 08:30 next day and handing over to their team)
- Assessing and managing patients on the GP Referral Unit (acute OMFS referrals)
- Outpatient care
- Support pre-operative assessment clinic (which is Nurse led)
In addition, there will be opportunities to be involved in the following for educational and training purposes:
- Specialist out-patient clinics
- OMFS operating lists
- Departmental teaching sessions
- Clinical Governance meetings
- Audit, Research and Quality Improvement
- Anatomy Demonstrating and Medical Student teaching (affiliation with Oxford University)
- Foundation Programme OMFS induction
There is plenty of support to participate in projects within the department.
Previous incumbents have been successful in signing off their Alternative Certificate of Foundation Competence and joining a training programme. This job is designed to give good exposure to all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery and on-call experience covering Plastic surgery.
