Job summary
The Oxford Limb Reconstruction Service is a busy multidisciplinary team that works very closely with the Oxford Bone infection Unit and Ortho plastics. We consequently have a very varied workload receiving complex referrals both nationally and internationally. Experience will be gained in the management of deformity correction, non-union surgery and complex bone infection using a variety of techniques including Ilizarov, implantable antibiotic carriers and EPR. This post is most suitable for surgeons who have completed their specialist registrar training (post CCT is desirable) and are seeking experience in Limb Reconstruction Surgery prior to obtaining a consultant appointment but consideration will also be given to those earlier in their training who can demonstrate a clear goal to become a limb reconstruction specialist.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will gain clinical and operative skills under the direct supervision of the consultants on the Limb Reconstruction team. The post holder will conduct clinics, operating lists, ward rounds and assist with clinical management with the consultants and on behalf of the consultants' during their absence.
Within the team there are three operating lists per week and a multidisciplinary infection clinic once per week, involving the limb reconstruction team, infectious disease physicians and plastics surgeons. This is followed by an infection radiology MDT. There are regular orthoplastic combined operating lists which undertake single stage infection surgery.
With adequate experience, the post holder will be encouraged to undertake additional clinics and operating lists independently.
The post holder will also be encouraged to take a leadership role in management and governance in the team with appropriate support.
The post holder will participate within the orthopaedic speciality registrar on-call rota at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre site, Long days - resident/non-resident shifts, Weekends, Nights.
The objective of the Fellowship is to develop an individual from a senior registrar role to a point of overall competence to work in / lead a specialised Limb Reconstruction practice.

Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a teaching hospital and is 1 of 4 sites of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It provides a service for the clinical management of musculoskeletal problems its facilities include Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and a specialised diagnostic service in Histopathology and Medical Imaging.
There are 5 orthopaedic in-patient wards, 1 in-patient bone infection unit, HDU/Recovery with an overall total of 196 beds, 8 operating theatres and a purpose-built day surgery unit.
The hospital takes 5000 admissions each year, sees 30,000 outpatients, either on the premises or in peripheral clinics, there is a tertiary referral centre for specialist orthopaedics and physical rehabilitation. Patients are referred from the Oxfordshire district, other regions and beyond.
The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a hospital site which has grown considerably over recent years, and which is presently generating more work. It is expected that this will continue and promote the development of specialist activity within the field of orthopedics'.
