OVERVIEW AND PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:
Clinical:
The candidate will be responsible for the assessment and immediate care of children admitted acutely to hospital, the care of children in outpatient clinics, and all relevant clinical administrative work for his/her own patients.

Horton General Hospital duties
Outpatient clinics: General Paediatric
'Consultant of the week' at Horton General Hospital (1: 16) with resident weekend on call duties. During a weekend on call, the Consultant will be expected to be on site, either working on the children's ward or in children's ED. As Consultant of the week, the successful candidate will work with a Paediatric Specialty Doctor, other consultants, ward nursing staff and GP and F2 trainees, supervising care of all paediatric inpatients and assisting with assessment and initial management of children admitted via ED or their GP and with the management of Paediatric surgery/orthopedic inpatients where necessary.
Share of resident overnight on call covering the Children's ward running Monday to Thursday, and with weekends running Friday to Sunday. Share of non-resident on call duties providing backup for the resident team as outlined in the job plan below.
About us
The John Radcliffe Acute Paediatric Service (JRH) serves approximately 100,000 children and their families between the ages of 0-16yrs of age from Oxford City, West Oxfordshire, Vale of the White Horse, South Oxfordshire, and Cherwell. North Oxfordshire and South Northamptonshire are covered by the Paediatric department at the Horton General Hospital (HGH) which currently serves approximately 25.000 children. The paediatric population throughout Oxfordshire is forecasted to increase by 32% over the next 15 years.
Services on the JR site are delivered within the purpose-built children's Emergency department, Clinical decision unit (CDU), Bellhouse Drayson ward, Children's Day care ward, and Children's Outpatient department. On the HGH site services are delivered through the Emergency Department, and the Children's ward. CSU meetings are held on both sites on a regular basis.
The Children's ED department sees approximately 30 000 children, with the CDU open 24/7 with capacity for 5 beds and 7 chairs, allowing for rapid review and discharge of patients. CDU currently reviews approximately 500 children per month. Both departments are staffed during the day by Speciality Paediatric doctors and 24/7 by paediatric trained nurses. Inpatient units across both sites are staffed by a team of experienced children's nurses and children and staff also benefit from the support of dedicated paediatric radiologists, PITU and PHDU.
