Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new senior engineer to join our Radiotherapy Technical Services (RTS) team. The post holder will be responsible for initially one Varian True-Beam linac and a Siemens SOMATOM go.Sim CT in our new radiotherapy satellite unit in Milton Keynes. Two linac bunkers have been built with an additional linac to be installed at a later date. (The postholder may initially be working with our team in Oxford before their role starts in Milton Keynes)

Main duties of the job

This post is primarily concerned with providing first line support, troubleshooting, repair, calibration and maintenance for two Varian True-Beam linacs and a Siemens SOMATOM go.Sim CT used for clinical radiotherapy in Milton Keynes.

Good communication with treatment radiographers, physicists and clinical staff regarding machine behaviour, identifying faults, rectify equipment, liaising with equipment manufacturers etc is paramount to the role.

Radiotherapy Technical Services also provide wider support to the department offering creative solutions in the development of other radiotherapy project/ patient support devices.

About us

The OUH Radiotherapy Centre at the Churchill Hospital is a five linac, all-Varian (including Halcyon, TrueBeam & iX) site with CT-sim, ARIA, Eclipse and HDR brachytherapy unit, plus a prostate seed brachytherapy service. Our existing satellite centre in Swindon operates a further two linacs and a CT-sim. A second satellite centre in Milton Keynes operating a single linac and CT-sim will open in 2024. Supporting systems include AI auto-contouring and RadCalc. We have a modern suite of treatment planning functionality including RapidPlan, MCO, HyperArc and Velocity, and we treat with a wide variety of techniques including SRS/SRT and SABR. In addition to a major linac and CT replacement programme we have a range of development work underway and on the horizon and also an active computing team working to develop software and scripts for automation and data analysis. We have close links with the CRUK/MRC Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology and an expanding portfolio of clinical trials.

Job responsibilities

This post is primarily concerned with providing first line support, troubleshooting, repair, calibration and maintenance for two Varian True-Beam linacs and a Siemens SOMATOM go.Sim CT used for clinical radiotherapy in Milton Keynes.

The post holder is an important member of Radiotherapy Technical Services, providing comprehensive first line support for the Varian linear accelerators and Siemens CT. The post holder is responsible for the day to day running of their electronics laboratory. The applicant will be required to manage their own time efficiently due to mainly sole working as an engineer in this dept. Full support/ cover from OUH RTS in Oxford will be provided as and when required, as well as support from the equipment manufacturers and in house technologists/ physicists.

The post holder ensures that radiotherapy equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime. Both the Varian linacs & Siemens CT are covered by a full manufacturer service and parts contract for added support to this engineering role. The post holder will be based at Milton Keynes but will also be expected to provide cover for the team of engineers at OUH RTS in Oxford, if required. This satellite centre is linked to our main host centre in Oxford as well as our other satellite centre in Swindon.

The post holder liaises with clinical, scientific and engineering staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas and working with equipment manufacturers.
