Clinical
The post-holders duties will be primarily at the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital site but the opportunity to work in theatre can be explored once appointed.
Teaching/Research
Opportunities for teaching, training, research and management will be available within the fellowship programme and will be agreed by the Clinical Lead for Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit with the post holder prior to commencement of the fellowship.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
Infection Control
Infection Control is everyones responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby
reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. All staff employed by the OUH Trust have the following key responsibilities:
- Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
- Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
- Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
General
The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department. Office accommodation is available for this post.
IMPORTANT GENERAL NOTE
The post-holder must take reasonable care of his/her own health and safety and any other personnel who may be affected by his/her omission. Trust policies and regulations must be followed at all times.
Senior Clinical Fellowship in Neurocritical Care Job Plan
Post Duration -fixed term 12 months
This job is based in the tertiary referral Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit in Oxford. The job entails providing cover of the 15 level 3 bed tertiary referral Neuro ICU as a shift pattern involving on-call and weekend working. It is suitable for those with CCT, or close to CCT, in Anaesthetics and / or ICM who have a strong interest in Neuro-Critical Care and wish to gain extra experience in this field in preparation for a Consultant post. While gained expert subspeciality knowledge, the Fellow is expected to take a leading role within the day-too-day running of the Neuro ICU, under Consultant supervision, including supervising junior colleagues. The Fellow is expected to work on the Airway tier of the Unit on-call rota. This post has an extremely high success rate of holder being appointed to Consultant positions on completion.
There will be the opportunity to take part in anaesthesia sessions or areas relevant to the applicants experience and also to further enhance ones CV .
The Fellow will also be part of the Cardiac Arrest Team in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital and therefore should have ALS.
All on-call is closely supervised at consultant level, with the consultant assuming overall responsibility.
Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.
MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
- The post is covered by the national Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the Conditions of Service determined by the General Whitley Council for the Health Services (Great Britain), as amended from time to time. As the Trust develops it will review these terms and may vary the national agreements to respond to local conditions and reflect Trust requirements following negotiation with the BMA Local Negotiating Committee.
- Applicants invited for interview will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire for submission to the Trust's occupational health service.
NB Medical staff who will be undertaking clinical work will be required to provide written proof of hepatitis B immunisation and antibody status, BCG and rubella immunisations. In the absence of such evidence the post-holder will not be placed on the payroll or undertake clinical work until the evidence is produced to the satisfaction of the Trust.
- The successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC.
- The successful candidate is not required to subscribe to a recognised professional defence organisation to fulfil his/her contractual obligations to this Trust, but should ensure he/she has adequate defence cover as appropriate, for example GMC disciplinary proceeding.

The John Radcliffe Hospital is the main emergency site and is designated as a Major Trauma Centre. It provides Acute Medical and Surgical services, Trauma, Neurosciences (Neurology and Neurosurgery), Cardiac, Specialist Surgery (Ophthalmology; Ear, Nose and Throat; Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery), Womens Services and Childrens Services (based in the Childrens Hospital on the site). Critical Care facilities include an adult general intensive care unit (Oxford Critical Care), Paediatric and Neonatal intensive care and two specialist critical care units (Neurosciences and Cardiothoracics).
The West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital opened in January 2007 along with the Childrens Hospital, Oxford. The West Wing houses services were previously based in the Radcliffe Infirmary in the centre of Oxford. The West Wing offers state of the art facilities for patients and for staff, with services including neurosciences, specialist surgery and the Oxford Eye Hospital. In addition to clinical space, it provides a base for University teaching and research. The Radcliffe Infirmary building, which has housed medical services, teaching and research, since the 18th century, has been passed to the University of Oxford.

This is a purpose-built unit which opened in January 2007 following relocation from the old Radcliffe Infirmary. It has a 17-bed capacity, including 4 isolation rooms with positive/negative pressure capability, and is currently staffed to 13 level 3 beds. The unit has rapid access to neurosurgical theatres, CT and MRI scanners and an angiography suite. The unit fosters close relationships with its neurosurgeons, neurologists and neuroradiologists. Since relocation to the John Radcliffe Hospital site the unit has benefited enormously from on-site services including Microbiology, Trauma and Echocardiography.
The unit has 24 hours consultant cover, with two dedicated consultant in-hours during the week and one consultant at the weekends. The unit has two tiers of on-call cover at any time. A number of other trainees rotate through the unit, including FY2 doctors and specialist neurosurgical and stroke medicine trainees.
The unit has a strong clinical governance and audit framework. ICNARC and TARN data analyses show strong and consistent performance in quality indicators. The unit provides a strong mentorship environment.
The unit has developed a central role within the South-Central Critical Care Network. This will provide an opportunity for the successful candidate to further collaborative and management skills through the development and consolidation of a robust system for major trauma care within the region.
