PHYSICIAN ASSOCIATE IN CLINICAL HAEMATOLOGY (SPECIAL INTEREST BMT)
Applications are invited to apply for this post in the Department of Clinical Haematology. This will include clinical planning and transplant pathway management, support of clinical haematology ward and bone marrow biopsy delivery work.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic and forward-thinking service at a tertiary cancer centre that specialises in both autograft and allograft stem cell transplants. You will be trained in all skills required for the role, including all elements of the bone marrow transplant (BMT) pathway and skills to become proficient in undertaking bone marrow biopsy.
The post is available from September 2023.

Clinical and Research Responsibilities:
BMT Scheduling and Planning
Alongside the consultants and specialist nursing team, a key component of this role is to support patients and their families through the BMT pathway, from time of referral to post-transplant care. This will involve compassionate and effective communication with these service users, both via phone, email and clinical appointments. The role also includes liaison and collaboration with a wide range of other clinical services, including NHSBT, registry bodies and district general hospitals. The post-holder will also be involved in arranged necessary pre-transplant investigations (e.g. echocardiogram, lung function test, PET/CT, bone marrow biopsy, dental assessment)
The post holder will be trained in Good Clinical Practice, consent taking, HTA compliance and other mandatory training requirements. The job will involve a good mix of practical work, data management and patient interaction, with attendance at BMT outpatient clinic. The post holder is expected to work alongside other members of the clinical haematology team to cover service provision when necessary.
Bone marrow biopsy
Once trained and competence assessed, the post holder will undertake bone marrow biopsy procedures on BMT patients. They will work within this nurse led service.
Outpatients clinic
The postholder will review selected outpatients in BMT clinic and write their clinic letters. All outpatient activity will be supervised by the consultant in charge of the clinic and only appropriate patients will be allocated to the physician associate.
The appointee will undergo a period of training, supervision, and accreditation to activities relevant to the department.
The post holder will be supervised by a designated consultant and will also have individual mentors to overview their career development.
