Job summary

A full-time post as Trust Grade in Gastroenterology and Hepatology is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The job is available from Wednesday 8th November 2023 to Tuesday 6th February 2024 inclusive.

The department encourages participation in Clinical Research, Audit and Teaching. This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN. It would be suitable for someone wishing to gain further experience in Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology service in an internationally renowned tertiary centre and gain additional experience in these specialties. The post is primarily to support inpatient and daycase work Monday to Friday 'in hours'.

The post-holder will form part of a ward team of 1-2 IMT3s, 3 IMT1-2s, and 1 F1, supported by 3 to 4 Gastroenterology/Hepatology specialist trainees (ST3+), led by the Consultant Gastroenterology and Hepatology team, of whom several provide ward cover (Drs Cobbold, Collier, Pavlides, Saffioti, Culver for liver, and Brain, Walsh and Ambrose for luminal).

Job description

Job responsibilities

To contribute to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology service in an internationally renowned tertiary centre and gain additional experience in these specialties. The post is primarily to support inpatient and daycase work Monday to Friday in hours

The post-holders duties will be at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The post-holder will form part of a ward team of 1-2 IMT3s, 3 IMT1-2s, and 1 F1, supported by 3 to 4 Gastroenterology/Hepatology specialist trainees (ST3+), led by the Consultant Gastroenterology and Hepatology team, of whom several provide ward cover (Drs Cobbold, Collier, Pavlides, Saffioti, Culver for liver, and Brain, Walsh and Ambrose for luminal)

  1. Ward patients dedicated 20-bedded unit for secondary and tertiary gastroenterology & hepatology referrals including complex inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal failure and liver disease. There are separate luminal and liver teams. Sometimes there will be outliers on other medical/surgical wards.
  2. Daycase unit for infusions (e.g. biological drugs, intravenous iron), daycase paracentesis and ambulatory reviews.
  3. Consults This will largely be carried out by the registrars/consultants but the post-holder may be asked to assist from time to time.
  4. Other Attendance at multi-disciplinary meetings for radiology, histopathology and IBD. Regular interaction with other disciplines including specialist nursing (IBD, hepatology, nutrition), dietetics, pharmacists, stomatherapists, and surgical teams. There is opportunity to learn about management of complex nutritional issues including patients undergoing intestinal transplantation.
