Job summary

The Orthotic department within Oxford University Hospitals is seeking a substantially experienced Orthotist who is enthusiastic and highly motivated to become a senior member of the clinical team. This role has become available due to recent staff changes and is a great opportunity to join one of the biggest In-house Orthotic departments in England.

The Orthotic department has a large clinical and workshop facility in a purpose built modern building which is increasingly using CADCAM technology. A core function to the service is the integrated working practices between skilled technicians and orthotists in achieving good outcomes to our service users. The department is well respected in the profession for its orthotic service delivery.

All applicants must be registered as a Prosthetist/Orthotist with HCPC and preferably members of BAPO.

Main duties of the job

We provide orthotic clinics primarily on site at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre but also within other Trust sites and hospitals within the local area. The team has specialist practice within the areas of foot and ankle, paediatrics, spinal, neuro-rehabilitation and gait analysis.

The post holder will be a key member of the senior clinical team and will provide leadership and mentoring support to less experienced orthotists. Extensive clinical experience and expertise are essential to thrive in this role . Also a desire to develop leadership skills in managing a team is required.

Responsible for considering relevant risk assessments or safety guidance in consultations or when designing or providing orthoses.

To be responsible for reporting any untoward incidents or near misses using relevant reporting systems such as Trust Datix, MHRA or other required reporting systems.

Responsible for referral and liaison other disciplines to provide optimum patient care. Recognising where alternative interventions may be appropriate.

To communicate effectively with patients, carers and families, GPs, Consultants and AHPs with regard to clinical care both in direct contact and through clinical letters and reports within a duty of care.

To maintain a current knowledge of relevant clinical pathologies to be able to devise the most appropriate prescriptions.

Responsible for keeping up to date with relevant clinical research, best practice and professional guidelines.

Responsible for own Continued Professional Development and providing feedback to colleagues through reflective practice, clinical meetings, supervision and mentorship.

To participate under the preceptorship programme to meet the Knowledge & Skills Framework outline.

Where appropriate to liaise with technical staff over own clinical caseload manufacturing or technical issues ensuring responsibilities are completed within lead times.
