Job summary

The Oxford Kidney & Transplant Unit is looking fortwo dynamic and enthusiastic doctors to join the team working in Transplantation Surgery. The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest acute teaching trusts in the country.

These are replacement posts. The appointments are on a whole-time basis, but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share. Candidates are expected to be at or close to Post CCT level in competence and training.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities will include emergency and elective transplant and transplant-related operating, support of the organ retrieval service, outpatient clinics, ward rounds and care of inpatients. Senior Clinical Fellows are expected to have or acquire the skills necessary to lead the multi-organ retrieval team. Any necessary training will be provided.

Opportunities could exist for elective experience in HPB surgery after dedicated time in Transplantation.

Development opportunities exist in pancreas transplantation, kidney transplantation, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, vascular access & multi organ retrievals.

Job responsibilities

TransplantationThe Senior Clinical Fellows support the clinical activities of the Oxford Transplant Centre as directed by the Clinical Director. Clinical responsibilities will include emergency and elective transplant and transplant-related operating, support of the organ retrieval service, outpatient clinics, ward rounds and care of inpatients. Senior Clinical Fellows are expected to have or acquire the skills necessary to lead the multi-organ retrieval team. Any necessary training will be provided.

Hepatobiliary/pancreatic (HPB)The HPB clinical service carries out approximately 175 major resectional surgical procedures per year and has a substantial work-load in benign HPB surgery, inpatient management, outpatient clinics and ward-rounds. Together with middle-grade staff and consultants, the Senior Clinical Fellows contribute to specialist out-of-hours cover for HPB patients.

ResearchThe successful candidates will be expected to engage in the research activities of the department. The Oxford Transplant Centre is closely associated with major research programmes within the Oxford Transplant Centre as well as the Nuffield Department of Surgery and other departments in the University. Currently active projects include: novel approaches to liver and kidney preservation; pancreatic islets; long term metabolic function of transplanted pancreases; pancreas preservation and viability assessment; multi-centre trial of novel immunosuppression. There are opportunities in clinical HPB research, including trials of novel treatments of pancreatic and liver cancer and also opportunities to engage in lab-based projects.

TeachingSenior clinical fellows are expected to take part in the teaching of medical students within the Clinical School, under the direction of the transplant educational lead.

Clinical GovernanceThe post-holders will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
