Clinical Fellow in Genomic Medicine

Applications are invited for a 12-month fixed term full-time Clinical Fellow in Genomic Medicine at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). The post is based at The Oxford Centre for Genomic Medicine (OxGEM) which is located in the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

The successful candidate will join a team of 11 consultants, 4 honorary consultants, 11 genetic counsellors and 4 Specialist Registrars supported by a secretarial and administrative team along with a cancer triage team, a family history coordinator and a team of genomic practitioners and associates. We are seeking an enthusiastic clinical fellow who shares the values of the OUH in providing excellent, compassionate care.

The role offers an opportunity for an individual keen to develop experience of genomic medicine prior to embarking on specialist training in clinical genetics; an individual with some experience or CCT in clinical genetics keen to develop a specialist interest, or an individual training in a different discipline (eg oncology or paediatrics), keen to develop their understanding of genomic medicine.

Main duties of the job

DUTIES OF THE POST:

Principal Responsibilities:

The post is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in Genomic Medicine. This is gained mostly through assessment and management of genetic outpatients but in addition specific periods of time will be allocated for the other aspects of Genomic Medicine described below.

The post-holder will:

  • Gain experience in genetic assessment and genetic counselling in clinics run by the department both within Oxford and other hospitals within the counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and the Swindon District of Wiltshire. Access to independent transport is desirable.
  • Gain experience in the diagnosis and management of genetically determined disease.
  • Gain an understanding of variant interpretation in medical genetics, with a specific focus on bioinformatics to learn how to assess a genetic variant for pathogenicity.
  • Gain exposure to different sub-specialities within Genomic medicine, such as dysmorphology, cancer genetics, cardiac genetics, neurogenetics etc.
  • Gain experience in laboratory methods relevant to clinical genetics (cytogenetic, DNA (single gene, whole exome and whole genome testing), and biochemical investigations), to request tests and to discuss the results with patients
  • Develop or continue a research interest, which could either be clinically or laboratory based
  • Have an opportunity to attend local and regional training days in Genomic Medicine

Description of Working Pattern:

Normal working week Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm each day.

Additional time for clinic travel can be accommodated within a 40 hour week.

Administration/Management:

The post-holder will have appropriate secretarial support and designated office space with direct access to a computer.

There are four Specialist Trainees in the department who rotate various administrative/management roles (e.g. representing trainees on department management team, coordinating weekly clinical meetings).

TRAINING AND RESEARCH:

Research:

The post holder will be encouraged to further develop existing research interests or to initiate a research or audit project. There are many genetic research groups in Oxford with whom collaborations can be established. Within the department, there are many Chief Investigators with whom a research project could be established. Writing up interesting case reports is encouraged

Facilities for Study and Training:

Library facilities are available at the John Radcliffe Hospital and at other libraries in the Central Oxford Hospitals
