Job summary

Working closely with the OSM, Deputy OSM and Clinical Leads this post will play a key role in ensuring that the designated Neonatal and Paediatric Critical Care clinical services meet key Operational, Finance, Quality and Governance objectives.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide visible leadership to the departments, working to ensure effective operational management and delivery of the service.
  • Work with the respective Clinical Leads to manage the day to day running of the specified services to ensure all aspects of Operational performance are met.
  • Ensure that patient experience and quality of care is considered at all times.
  • Proactive involvement in the emergency pathway for the relevant sub speciality areas.
  • Working with Clinical Leads and the Directorate team to ensure that RTT, Diagnostic and Cancer Performance targets are met; working with clinical staff to balance demand and capacity where necessary.
  • Support services to ensure appropriate medical staffing resources are in place to meet the needs of the service.
  • Maintain oversight of the budget and financial performance for the relevant sub-speciality areas.
  • In conjunction with the OSM, Deputy OSM and Clinical Leads, develop and prepare business cases and service development proposals in response to the needs of the service, in line with the Trust Business Planning process.
  • Provide line management for relevant staff and groups/ individuals within the Directorate team.
  • Represent the interests of the Directorate at relevant Directorate, Divisional and Trust meetings. Deputising for the OSM/Deputy OSM as needed.
  • Participating in the Trust Escalation Procedure as a member of the Bronze tier.

Key Relationships and Communication

  • The role will be required to communicate complex and sensitive information both verbally and written, including proposals, reports, and presentations to Directorate/ Divisional teams and occasionally to external NHS related organisations.
  • The role will involve facilitation of change within and across organisational and professional boundaries and will require highly developed negotiation, facilitation and persuasive skills.
  • The role will require the investigation of complaints and performance issues and the communication of this information to patients, families and members of the management team.
  • The role must manage conflict and obstacles to change by the formulation of strategies and processes to overcome such barriers.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

  • The role requires the utilisation of both theoretical and practical knowledge in the management of teams and services.
  • Knowledge and experience will be applied in managing complex and at times competing projects, and the post-holder must facilitate the professional development of their own team to improve management capacity and capability.

Planning and Organisational Skills

  • The role will require strong organisational skills with an ability to deliver agreed objectives within agreed timeframes.
  • The role will manage projects and proactively develop services in a complex, fast moving environment. The role will facilitate change programmes to raise standards of care for patients.

Leadership and People Management

  • Act as an inspirational role model.
