This job is now closed

Job summary

One post as Senior Clinical Fellow in Nutrition, Intestinal Transplant and IBD is available, at the John Radcliffe Hospital, OUH Trust. The post is of one year's duration in the first instance. Candidates are strongly recommended to read the job descriptions and person specifications carefully. The post would suit a senior UK trainee looking to further subspecialty experience, as well as oversees candidates.

Short listed candidates are invited to contact Dr Emma Culver, Consultant Hepatologist Translational Gastroenterology Unit, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, The John Radcliffe (email: emma.culver@ouh.nhs.uk).

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.

Main duties of the job

One advanced Clinical Nutrition and Intestinal Transplantation full-time fully-funded Fellowship is available at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This newly available post will offer advanced training in nutrition as well as additional specialist IBD and coeliac disease experience. This will provide a great opportunity for an out-of-programme experience (OOPE) or training (OOPT) for UK trainees looking to develop expertise in these areas, or for international candidates, and could be a springboard into research within the department.

The post, will involve 12 months with experience and training in intestinal rehabilitation comprising both enteral and parenteral nutritional support, and the medical support and decision-making involved in adult intestinal transplantation. As an NHSE designated Integrated Care Centre for Severe Intestinal Failure, and one of only two adult intestinal transplant centres in the UK, this is a rare opportunity for exposure to advanced level nutrition expertise, alongside small bowel and IBD experience in an internationally renowned IBD centre. As with all our SCF posts, the principle is that there are 6 clinical and 4 academic/learning sessions per week, the academic sessions being allocated 1 each to clinical trials, a personal project, teaching and administration. The John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals provide an integrated service with Horton General Hospital.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Gastroenterology out-of-hours cover rota, and to weekday emergency endoscopy and ward referral weeks at 1:12 frequency. The latter provides an opportunity to enhance endoscopic management of upper GI bleed, and provide supported consultations for inpatients. As with all 6 Senior Clinical Fellows in Oxford, the endoscopy sessions are flexible and may need to be worked on a Saturday. It is important to note that there is no General (Internal) Medicine commitment in this post.

One of the significant strengths of our department are the multiple opportunities to attend clinical and research meetings throughout the week. Clinical meetings include luminal histopathology, luminal radiology, plus clinical multidisciplinary meetings including the intestinal transplant and intestinal failure MDTs, and the IBD MDT. Uniquely our department also has a weekly academic afternoon with a range of clinical and research focussed learning opportunities, in addition to which there is a weekly journal club. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to departmental research through the management of gastroenterology and nutrition clinical trials and other projects or audit, under appropriate guidance. It would suit someone wishing to develop Clinical Nutrition and IBD subspecialist expertise beyond that acquired through general gastroenterology training before a Consultant post. The Unit is well recognised for its international diversity and the posts attract the best trainees from many areas of the world.

Please refer to attached job description for further details.
