This is a 2 year fixed term contract appointment to support the Imaging services across UHDB. The post is based at the UHDB, mainly split between two major sites with acute care facilities (RDH and QHB). Any extension past the initial 2 years would require the post holder to be working towards Portfolio Pathway submission, for entry onto the GMC Specialist Register.
We are looking to appoint a Locum General Consultant Radiologist with sub speciality interest in Breast Imaging The appointed candidate will work with a team of established specialist radiologists providing diagnostic imaging expertise in Radiology.
The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust have 50 + Consultant Radiologists (part and full time). In addition, we have 18 Speciality Registrars on rotation from Nottingham and Leicester. The appointed consultant is expected to cover general reporting in addition to their sub-speciality work and participate on the diagnostic on call rota at the Royal Derby Hospital.
The on-call work will be supported by a large cross site team of 12 reporting radiographers reporting plain film and MSK MRI. Also 3 consultant Radiographers, 1 of which is a Breast consultant Radiographer.
Main duties of the job
The post attracts 10 PAs (8.5 DCC + 1.5 SPA) but we would be happy to consider part time working arrangements.
The Breast Service at is a large, integrated, cross-site unit delivering high-quality, patient-centred care across both symptomatic and screening pathways. The service mainly operates from the Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and Queen's Hospital Burton (QHB), which merged breast services in 2017 to form a unified multidisciplinary offering that supports a population spanning Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
In addition, we operate a static screening site at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital and our three mobile units are rotated across the region. In total we have 10 mammography machines (GE and Hologic) and 4 US (GE and Samsung) machines.
We provide the full spectrum of breast imaging and diagnostic services, including symptomatic one-stop clinics, screening assessments, image-guided biopsy, pre-operative localisation, MRI, CESM, MDT participation, and interval cancer review.
The service is supported by an extensive, experienced multidisciplinary team comprising Consultant Breast Radiologists, Consultant Surgeons, Oncologists, Pathologists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, one Consultant radiographer, Breast Care Nurses, IDAs, and a strong administrative workforce. s.
UHDB has a large cross site wider imaging department employing over 680 staff offering all imaging modalities over numerous sites. Our equipment portfolio supports modern up to date scanners.

In addition to specialist interests, all Consultants will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust:
Provision, in conjunction with Consultant colleagues, of a comprehensive imaging Service to Derbyshire, Staffordshire and surrounding areas with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department.
Responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your care and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to and training of your staff.
Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in the Diagnostic Radiology Consultant on-call Rota at RDH.
Active participation in undergraduate and postgraduate education includes training sessions for Foundation Years, Specialty Registrars, and medical students.
Provision of cover for your Consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients and supervision of doctors in training.
Responsible for the professional supervision, training, and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.
Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust and the Division).
