Job summary
Our Maternity Service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) are on a journey of improvement. As a service we strive to improve the experience for our expectant's mothers and their families through listening to our service users with our Trust board who have made significant investment in the maternity services financially and support of staff and service development.
The Maternity Services works in partnership with the Local Maternity and Neonatal Systems (LMNS) to drive the national maternity agenda forward to improve the safety and quality of our services.
The Deputy Head of Midwifery (HOM) is a senior managerial and clinical leadership post at UHDB. The primary role function is to support the Head and Director of Midwifery in providing a high level of professional support and advice to all staff working in the midwifery service. This will include having oversight of the day-to-day operational function of the services, to ensure safe, high-quality care is given to mothers and babies. There will be the need to support the wider corporate professional agenda.
In collaboration with the Head of Midwifery, the post holder will have delegated responsibility and accountability for, clinical standards, patient experience, and safe, effective service delivery across the maternity service.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Head Of Midwifery will also have a key role in the transformation and development of maternity services, including the strategic vision and direction of future service provision, and the associated development of an empowered workforce that will be trained and equipped to deliver high quality, safe care in all clinical settings.
A key element of the role will be to take the service lead for all workforce management issues associated with the midwifery and maternity support worker teams. Together with the senior midwifery team, this will comprise recruitment and retention, staff development and training and overall accountability for staffing budgets and establishments.
The post holder will be a visible and professional leader of midwives, nurses and support staff. The Deputy Head of Midwifery will be a clinically credible practitioner acting as an advocate and role model, using their expert knowledge and skills to further develop and maintain a safe, high quality personalised service for women choosing UHDB for their maternity experience.
Assist the Head of Midwifery in operational accountability for the Maternity Service and workforce as well as setting and delivering strategic direction for midwifery teams. They will support by providing effective visible leadership, contributing towards the achievement of the financial forecast and delivery of contracted activity.
